Chapter 1~ Childhood Memories

School had just gotten out, and I raced outside quick to get home. When I did, I greeted my mother on the way in, and placed my school bag on the chair.

"Going outside mom!" I called, making my way back toward the front door, just to be stopped by my mother.

"Wait a minute Clove," she said, looking down at me. "Do you have any homework?"

"Only a little. I just want to go outside with Cato," I explained, looking up at her, trying my best to look sweet. Cato was my best friend. "We won't go too far, please mom?"

"You know the rule. Homework first, then you get time to yourself."

"But mom, please?" I asked, even clamping my hands together.

"No Clove. Homework. Now." She said firmly, pointing to the dining room table.

"Fine," I said glumly, taking my bag off the chair and headed towards the dining room table to do my homework.

I pulled out my homework, and as I told mother, it wasn't too much. But still, I'd rather be outside with Cato. Within fifteen minutes I got the work done.

"I'm finished with homework, can I go outside now?" I asked.

"Yes you may, and I'll look over your work," She told me.

"Thank you mom!" I said, giving her a quick hug, then headed outside in a blur, heading over to Cato's.

Quickly I ran over to Cato's house, which was only a block or so down from my house. Once I arrived I knocked on the door, and waited for an answer.

Soon the door was pulled open by Cato, his blonde hair spiked up a bit like normal, and once his blue eyes spotted me, a smile grew on his lips. "Hey Clove!"

"Hey Cato! Are you able to come outside?" I asked, looking up at him a bit. Cato was just slightly taller than I was. And I wouldn't admit it, but I maybe had a slight crush on him.

"Let me check, come on in," he said, opening the door more so I could come in. I smiled and nodded, walking inside as he shut the door once I was inside.

"Mom," Cato said once he found his mother sitting in the living room. "Is it okay if I go outside with Clove?"

Cato's mother looked at me and smiled. "Hello Clove," she said, and I greeted her with a hello back, then she looked back to Cato. "Your homework finished?"

He nodded in response. "Yes it is."

She nodded and smiled. "Good. You can go outside. Don't go too far."

"Thank you mom," Cato smiled, then looked back to me. "Let's go," he grinned heading outside, me following close behind.

"So what should we do?" I asked once we were outside, chuckling softly.

"Wanna race?" Cato asked, grinning.

"Where?"

"To the training center," he told me.

"We're not allowed there yet, though," I pointed out.

"We're not allowed to go inside," he corrected.

"Alright fine. Let's race," I grinned back.

"Ready... set... go!" Cato shouted, laughing a bit as we both took off down the path towards the training center.

Quickly I took the lead, leaving Cato behind just a bit. Soon enough though he caught up to me, flying past me.

"Hey!" I called, laughing as I pushed my legs to run faster.

"Gotta catch up!" Cato called back, laughing as well.

Soon though we reached the training center, Cato beating me just by a little bit. We both laughed, and caught our breathes.

"I win," Cato smirked, almost arrogantly.

"Yeah, yeah," I said, sitting down on the ground, and he sat next to me.

We sat in comfortable silence, looking at the training center as people moved in and out of the place. Soon Cato broke the silence.

"What do you think training is like?" He asked.

I shrugged a bit. "I don't know. Seems like a lot to do, but kinda fun."

"Maybe," Cato nodded, smiling slightly. "We'll find out when we're old enough," he chuckled a bit and I nodded.

Neither of us really knew much about The Hunger Games. Just that two tributes, male and female, were taken from each district each year to honor their district. And most of the time it was our district, District 2, or District 1 that won the title of victor.

"When we're twelve," I inputed. "So we still have a while."

"Yeah," Cato nodded a bit.

We spent about another hour with each other, running around and just having fun. But soon we had to head back home.

"I'll see you Cato!" I called, waving goodbye to him.

"I'll see you Clove!" He called, waving back. Then we headed our separate ways back to our house.

Though, it was strange. I didn't see Cato any time soon. When I went to his house he always seemed busy, or couldn't hang out. This continued for a while, and we just grew apart. Year after year. Now, five years later, we'll see each other once again. As old friends, or almost strangers? I'll find out when I get to training.
