"Edd? Edd? Hey Edd," a voice called out as a hand waved across the man's face. He had zoned out again. But soon enough snapped back to reality.
"Um, yeah?" He asked, looking towards his good friend, Matt. They had only known each other for 2 years but they had grown close. It was their junior year of high school that fall, and things were falling apart fast. At least on Edd's end. From his slipping grades and mental health to his parents' divorce, life was tricky. At least he still had three supportive friends.
"Your nose is bleeding again," Matt said, snapping Edd out of his thoughts once more. He put a hand up to his face and as it came away bloody he sighed. He had been getting more and more bloody noses. A sign of the summer season.
"Thanks." He got up and left the room, going to the bathroom to try to get it to stop. He grabbed a washcloth and doused it in cold water, sitting on the edge of the bathtub. Matt followed in, figuring Edd wouldn't want to be alone.
"So you're only living with your mom now?" He asked, looking upset for Edd.
"Yeah. It's whatever. Dad wasn't the best anyway..."
Matt only hummed, shaking his head. "You gotta learn to be more positive."
Edd laughed, looking up at him. "More positive?"
"Yeah."
"That's stupid."
"Only a little."
Edd got up, rolling his eyes. "I'm calling Tom. Let's see if he's available."
"When isn't he?"
"Fair."
He went to his room and grabbed his phone, contacting Tom. Just as they suspected, he was able to come over, and hung up as he agreed. The only person left to invite was Tord.
Edd quickly called him up, but unlike Tom, he wasn't able to leave the house. He wouldn't say why but Edd suspected he had gotten grounded again. He shrugged it off but it still stung.
Now it was just time to wait for Tom to show up.
When he did, there was no major celebration, just Edd opening the door for him and Matt waving awkwardly.
"So this is where you went when you said you had somewhere to be, Matt?" Tom asked, squinting slightly.
It has been a few months since Matt had been kicked out of his place and was now living with Tom, who, as great of a friend as he was, Matt didn't want to bother. Rather, he spent most of his time with Edd, trying to help him out of his depressive rut. It was barely a task he could accomplish, however.
"Um, yeah," Matt muttered, admitting in embarrassment. "I figured you'd be busy, like, practicing for band or whatever..."
Tom sighed. "Come on, Matt, I always have time for you two! Don't worry!"
Edd smiled slightly, something he rarely did anymore. "Thanks, Tom."
Matt simply nodded, knowing deep down he wasn't convinced yet.
