The crowd was electric. I tried to push through to the end, but I was jostled by the people around me. Panic crept in, sweat rolled down my forehead.
"Ma!" I screamed, but my voice was one amongst the thousands.
The white thread of dawn was visible in the sky. I squinted, trying to spot my mother in the line of fauns on the wooden stage a few metres away, where the tall frame of the guillotine stood.
"Tonight, the age of witches begins!" A shrill voice rang out through the crowd, riling it up further.
"The fauns have held us back for too long! Now, with the help of the vampires, we take over and begin a new dawn!"
I couldn't care less about what she was saying. I pushed aside the people, trying to part the sea of witches and vampires. But to no avail.
My heart thudded against my chest, my breathing was rapid. Chaos surrounded me.
But my mother was the only thing on my mind.
I watched in horror, as they carried the fauns to the guillotine. Hacked off their horns, then their heads. Dumped the bodies to the side.
My mother was there. She was weeping, I was sure of it. The sky turned black, and my hand ached as I clutched the matchstick, almost breaking it.
Then my hopelessness turned to outright anger.
I thrust people to the ground, making my way to the wooden stage. They resisted, pushing me back.
"I'll kill you all!" I yelled, not caring if anyone heard me. "I'll kill you, you hear me?!"
The sound of the crowd roared in my ears, but when the guillotine's blade fell, everything went silent.
