It has been five years since she met him; he had always been one of her biggest supporters and she had fallen for him such a long time ago in such a confusing part of her life. Back then meeting him at the airport would have been so terrifying, loving a man was something she never thought she would do, she was raised differently than that, but there she was, sitting in her car in sky harbor phoenix waiting for just such a person.
It has been five years since he met her, he always had tried his best to support her in every way possible, but she was truly an enigma, something he truly didn't understand, but that didn't stop him from loving her, regardless. She defiantly tested everything in him, and he welcomed the challenge the entire time they had known each other. The plane was taxing up to the gate and his stomach was in knots, hoping everything wouldn't change when he saw her for the first time for real.
She sat there in her car waiting for the text to tell her he was there, every minute passing slower than the last the anxiety building inside of her. She flipped out the vanity mirror to check her makeup, to make sure she looked feminine enough. She was always overly harsh on herself and how she looked; she felt she had to be, she had to pass, without questions, just so she could be herself, it was exhausting.
He wondered what she was doing, what she was wearing, such a weird thing to be feeling he thought to himself as the plane finally made its final corrections into terminal B of Sky harbor airport. Deplaning had started and his mind wondered to the times over the last 5 years, and the building of their friendship, or whatever this was. She had some very hard times, and some very trying times for him even, being who she was it made things confusing, even though both had agreed on multiple occasions that it probably shouldn't be.
She felt her heart rate pick up randomly, something in her told her the time was near. She looked down at her t-shirt, a simple black guns and roses t-shirt she had bought back when she finally reached her weight goal, it was a symbol to her. The jeans she wore were nothing special, no holes in them like all the other girls seemed to wear, "Maybe I should have had ones with holes in them" she thought to herself, again being overly critical of her appearance. She wore red Converse that contrasted nicely with her shirt but didn't clash. Her hair was curly as it always had been and down to her shoulders, she checked it for split ends, of course there weren't any fresh ones, this was the 15th time she had checked.
Finally, it was his turn to get up and get his things, self-conscious, not even on the top 5 list of things he thought he would feel. He stopped quickly in the restroom just inside the terminal and stared at himself in the mirror. Nervous, he removed his glasses and cleaned them, probably 3 times while standing there, splashed water on his face, "You got this" he whispered to himself, then realized he wasn't the only one in the restroom. Dried off his hands and quickly left the room. He pulled his phone out "I'm here, I'll be in Alaskan, Arrivals, see you soon darlin'" the same pet name he had been using for this entire time, always felt right.
"See you soon hun" she responded, hun was the same for her, just felt right, she hoped things wouldn't completely change when he saw her for the first time, that was truly her biggest fear, everywhere she went that seeing her would ruin what she felt was an illusion. She knew she needed to get past that phrase, but it always felt, in the back of her mind, like she was lying, even though she had never been happier with herself before. She put her little red car in gear and pulled out of the "Cell phone waiting lot".
He stepped into the surprisingly warm November day in Phoenix Arizona and looked up to see the clear blue sky, he felt a vibration in his pocket "Omw 3 min" this was it, no turning back now. He saw her car turn the corner into arrivals in terminal B and his heart rate picked up. He could see her looking for him, of course she would have a hard time, pictures were just that, pictures. He knew the car from when she bought it, and there were often pictures of in in the background of a lot of her adventure photos. He waved his hand trying to get her attention, he could see her looking for him, and knew when she had noticed him when they made eye contact.
