"Alisa."
Slowly opening my eyes, the darkness startles me. I'm not used to waking up to the pitch black of the night. "Alisa," the voice repeats, "Come on." I roll over in bed, turning to face Tom, who stands before me dressed in a black hoodie and jeans. "What," I mumble, "I'm sleeping."
"Not anymore, you aren't," he says, ripping back the thin blanket and pulling on my arms. "You asked me to help you, so that's what I'm going to do. But I can't help you if you don't get your lazy ass up."
Groaning, I swing my legs over the side of the small bed and force myself to stand up. This only-going-out-at-night thing is getting old, fast.
He tossed some clothes at me. "Get dressed." I stumble into the small bathroom of the cabin that I now call home, slipping out of my cami and shorts and into the warmer clothes Tom gave me. Pulling my feet into my boots as I walked back out, I announced, "I'm ready. What now?"
"Just follow me," he says. "You'll see." He opens the creaky door and slips out into the night.
"Tom," I hiss after a few steps. "Won't your coven be wondering where you are?" Even from behind, I could tell he was scowling.
"They aren't expecting me back anytime soon. You don't have to ask all the time."
"Why don't you go back sometimes? Do they know you're with me?"
"Stop asking questions."
I sigh and trudge on after him, trying to mimic the smooth and silent way he walks. We enter the woods that surround the cabin, going in deeper and deeper till I'm sure we'll never find our way out. Even with these stupid new "powers", I keep running into things and tripping. Night vision. What a joke.
He finally stops and leans up against a tree. "Close your eyes," he orders.
"Why?" I ask.
"Alisa." he says, a small smile appearing, "Just trust me."
Irritated, I close my eyes. "Now listen, what do you hear?" I listen hard. The night seems silent. I can't hear a thing. "Nothing." I say, frustrated. "I can't hear anything."
"Keep listening." His voice isn't as rough, not as hard. He's calm out here, not as tense and mysterious. I close my eyes again and focus. Like before, at first I hear nothing, but then I hear a slight rustling sound with water gurgling in the background, the sounds growing louder as I focus. "Hear it?" he asks.
I nod. "Great. Now find it." My eyes flew open. "What?" I shrieked.
"Shut up! You'll scare the animal." he hisses under his breath. "This is how you hunt, Alisa. Now listen again and follow the sound of it. When you find it, signal me."
"Whatever." I grumble, closing my eyes once again. Whatever made the sound was still there, rustling in the brush. I open my eyes and take a deep breath, moving slowly towards the sound. Tom follows fairly far behind me, so as not to disturb the animal. After what seems like forever, I can see what made the sound, just up ahead. A deer stands in the moonlight, drinking from a small stream. I don't dare make a sound. I turn around slowly and silently point the deer out to Tom. He grins and steps up beside me.
"Breakfast," he mouths. I shift uncomfortably. He bursts into speed, becoming a dark blur, headed for the deer. But then, things go wrong.
Another creature flies out of the shadows, knocking Tom to the ground, him struggling against it's grasp. Another takes the deer down, fangs sinking into its neck. They've slowed down now, and I can see that both of the creatures are girls, about my own age. Tom seems to recognize them, and starts fighting against the one on top of him even harder. I start to run through the woods, but I can't leave Tom. I turn around and see both girls ganging up on him, and I scream.
Both of their heads instantly whip in my direction, red eyes staring into mine. The first gets off of Tom, shoving him to the side and standing up. Before I can realize what's happening, they come at me, fangs bared, eyes glowing red, hair streaming behind them as they move faster than I've ever seen even Tom move.
Tom's POV
I tackle Alison to the ground, screaming "Go!" at Alisa, hoping that she can get away. She looks terrified, but turns on her heel and flees. Right as I look back down at Alison, her fangs sink into my arm, biting down hard. I shout out in pain and grab her by the shoulders, hauling her to her feet and slamming her into a tree. Just when I think I'm doing okay, Rian rakes her claws down my back, and I know there's no winning this fight. I have to get away.
Alisa's POV
I run blindly through the woods, the sounds of snarling and hissing seeming to fill the air even though every step takes me farther away from the scene. I have no idea where I'm going without Tom's guidance. I'm too busy trying to remember where I'm going that my foot lands in a hole and twists, pain shooting up my leg. I try to keep my balance, but I fall to the ground, my head slamming against a tree, and the stars disappear.
