"Is that a fast-food job again?" I asked, worried about her career.
She shook her head. Her face beams with joy. I'm happy for her.
"I got a job at the NIA." Silence filled the room. I looked at her in disbelief. Seriously?
"I thought you already gave up?" She sighed and sat beside me.
"I--I thought I might try it again." She bit her lip and waited for my reaction. I just sighed. There's nothing I can do if that's what she wants. She took criminology for 2 years but she eventually gave up and transferred to sociology because of what happened to me---that was the time where we both promised we'll never get connected with crimes.
"Why NIA?" I asked after a few seconds of silence.
She looked at me, "I just want it." She smiled and stood up.
"Kris?" She glanced back at me waiting for my reply.
"Just be careful," I added. She smiled and nodded.
It was a sunny day. I drove my way to my psychology clinic which I started after graduating with a degree in psychology. Kris already left the house even before I woke up. It was her first day today so she was excited. She told me yesterday she must leave a good impression so she left the house early.
I stopped the car when the light turned red. I took my tumbler from the cupholder and drank the coffee I brewed at home. I glanced over the car beside me and saw a man at the same age as me driving a black BMW Z4. I quickly looked away when I saw him glancing at me.
"Thank, God," I mumbled to myself when the lights turned green and I ignited my car immediately. That was an awkward encounter with someone filthy rich. They might think I'm jealous---which I am, of course, but I wouldn't say that out loud.
I reached my clinic at the exact time I always arrive. We only have 3 staff--me, Nurse Cha and our receptionist, Lauren. I arrived before the two of them so I grabbed my keys from my purse and opened the door of the building.
I am only renting this place in this building since after graduation, I don't have that much money yet from my savings. My parents wanted to help me but I prefer to start something just from my efforts. I stepped inside the clinic and flipped the 'We are closed' sign. I quickly surveyed the whole clinic before walking inside my office.
I opened my computer and checked the schedule for today. There are 4 appointments scheduled. I just hope we have new walk-in patients. I checked one by one each profile of the patients I'll be meeting today and took some notes in my sticky notes.
I stopped midway when I heard the doors of our clinic opened. I stood up and checked to see who it is. It was Nurse Cha, she's still wearing her scrubs from the hospital she's working. She's only a part-timer here and sometimes when she's not around, Kris will take her place.
"You seriously need some sleep," I remarked when I got closer to her. Her hair's tied in a messy bun and her eyes looked tired. She just laughed and shook her head. She placed her things in our locker and looked at me.
"I don't need to sleep. I need to work, you have a session in 30 minutes." She placed her hands over her face.
"Relax, sit down first. I'm going to make you a cup of coffee." I grabbed the 3-in-1 sachet of coffee we have in our mini kitchen and turned on the water boiler.
