I woke up with a stiff back, listening to the early morning hustle and bustle of the kitchen. My mother was up and cooking breakfast with Steve. Steve had already made himself and wolfed down two breakfast sandwiches, stacked high with cheese, sausage, eggs, and ketchup. Gross. "Good morning Parker," my mom said to me. "Hi...." I trailed.
My mother had already mastered the art of "acting like nothing happened last night." Thankfully so was I. For all she knew, Hunter had taken us to the movies last night. For some reason my mother believes that Hunter is a reliable source of information.
Anna May and I spent the rest of the day watching YouTube videos, playing stupid games, talking about boys, and vegging out in front of the television with pizza and cheese puffs.
I liked these days. No parties, no responsibilities, no requirement to wear pants. I felt like Anna May and I really connected on these days. After a couple hours, her mom came to pick her up.
Her mother was just like her: Beautiful, sophisticated, and put together. Anna May's mom went in to talk for a while, as moms have a habit of doing. After what seemed like an hour, Anna May's mom came out and loaded Anna May into the car.
As soon as the car was out of sight, my mom yelled, "PARKER! GET IN HERE AND CLEAN UP!" As I was wiping off the table, my mom said, "Parker, Anna May's mom told me that Anna May won't be in town next week for her national swimming competition. "Oh," I said. I had forgotten that once a year Anna May has a national swimming competition in out of state.
I was kind of disappointed. I had planned on spending the weekend with Anna May. I'll just have to spend it with Hunter. Great.
