The handmade wooden lounge chairs were covered in terrycloth towels and pillows when Evan returned, and the smell of charcoal was thick in the air from the small deck grill. Inside the main cabin hub, there was soft humming and the bubbling of a pot on the stove. Quiet jazz music spilled from the home crafted indoor/outdoor speaker system. Evan smiled, leaning into the door frame. Izzy dropped the last crab into the pot and replaced the lid. She looked over her shoulder and gave him a grin.
"Did you grab the fresh veggies?" Evan held up the burlap grocery bag. Izzy took the food and gave him a quick kiss.
"You've been busy."
"I aim to impress."
"You think she's cute." Evan laughed at Izzy's little shrugged acknowledgment. "I see how it is."
"Half the fun of dating a pansexual woman is getting to talk about other hot girls together," she replied with a wink.
"I can honestly say that wouldn't have gone over well with Alison."
"Have you heard anything from her recently?" Izzy climbed onto the counter, grabbing at a colander from on top of the cabinet.
"Not directly. Her lawyer has been in contact."
"Oh lord." She climbed down and placed the colander in the sink. "What does he want?" She asked.
"She's talked Allie into asking for alimony."
"Think she'll get it?"
"Not likely. She doesn't exactly have any leverage here."
Izzy dried her hands and turned, hands on hips. "Well, for tonight we aren't going to worry about it. Tonight, the three of us are going to have a good time. I'm going to go take a shower." She gave him a quick. "Think you can finish up in here?"
"Absolutely."
Twenty minutes to four, the sound of a car on the single-lane road broke through the quiet. Evan stood on the deck, watching for Kelsey. The road could be a bit tricky for anyone that wasn't familiar with it. Finally, a green hatchback rambled past the trees and turning into the sandy lot. Evan smiled as Kelsey climbed out and waved.
"Come on up!"
Kelsey let out a low-whistle as she looked around. "I thought Abby was making up some of the details about this place."
"It's a paradise for a child's imagination here." Evan pulled Kelsey into his arms. "Glad you could make it."
"Me too." The kiss was quick, tender but with a heated promise of much more to come. "Where's the bathroom?"
"Second building."
A wave of fluttering wings took off into the pale blue sky, accompanied by a chorus of caws. Brow furrowed, Evan leaned on the porch railing and looked back a the road. A black SUV broke through the trees and pulled into the lot. His heart lodged itself in his throat as the tall woman with the wide-brimmed sun hat climbed out. Evan's white knuckles clenched tighter on the wooden railing.
"Well. Shit."
"Good to see you too, Allie."
"Didn't expect you to be up here so soon."
"Didn't expect you up here at all."
"Things have been... stressful. I still have a key and I wanted some R and R."
"Guess it's time to change the lock."
"Abby around?"
"No."
