Matthew's POV
I woke up this morning with a smile on my face. No school for me today! Not only was it my birthday, but I get to shift for my first time! I run out of my door and down the long hallway. When I reach the kitchen, my parents are there waiting for me. "Happy Birthday Matthew! Eat your breakfast so we can go to the woods." Mom said with a smile. "What about school? I know I'm missing it, but what will I say to my teachers?" I asked. "I can't just be like, 'sorry I wasn't here. I had to shift into my wolf.' " My parents laughed. "Don't worry. We already called the principal and told him you have a cold." I finished eating my pancakes and bacon, and then we were already walking to the woods. My dad found a small meadow surrounded by trees earlier so that I could have some privacy and a place to focus.
My dad started talking when we arrived at the small meadow. "Alright son. This is going to hurt the first time, but it won't hurt any other times after that. Just know that the faster the first shft takes, the stronger your wolf will be. Don't rush it though. Alright, now clear your head and just focus on shifting." I listened to my father and sat down, closing my eyes. I cleared my head of everything first, and then I focused on shifting. I started to hear my bones crack and whine from the change that was happening. I kept on focusing, not trying to think of the pain. The growing pains grew worse and it was all over my body. Suddenly, I heard one final pop, and I opened my eyes.
The world was so clear. Everything I saw and heard was crisper, clearer. My parents looked at me with love and proudness. I went over to the river to see my wolf's color. My reflection was a black wolf with white at the tips of my ears, tail, and paws.
For the rest of the day, I just explored and played games with the pack in my new form. I was so happy, except that I couldn't share this happiness with Isabella. She's my best friend and I can't tell her anything about this hidden world.
The Next Day
Still Matthew's POV
I woke up and did my morning routine. When I got downstairs, my dad was there waiting for me. "What's up?" I grabbed a waffle and put in the toaster. "Matthew, you do understand that you are 14 now." I grabbed a glass and set it down slowly. "Yeah. Why is this so important suddenly?" I grabbed the milk and poured it. My father stayed silent, and then it hit me. "Dad. Are you worried about me finding my mate?" He looked at me straight in the eyes. "I love you son, but know that if you find your mate, you are young. You don't even need to date her yet. I'm just trying to protect you from the consequences of rushing it." When he saw mom walk in he added, "women can be very unpredictable." "And just what do you mean by that!" Mom scolded. "Well, I'm not getting in this fight. Bye mom and dad!" I ran out the door thinking about who my mate could be.
When my bus arrived at school, I walked off and looked around. I found Isabella waiting for me by the walkway, when all of a sudden I smelt the most amazing scent. I looked at Isabella, and when she looked back at me I almost shifted on the spot. She is my mate. Overwhelmed with happiness, I walked towards her grinning. I always had a secret crush on her, and I was afraid I'd lose her if she wasn't my mate.
Isabella's POV
Matthew walked up to me with a smile on his face. "Well someone recovered quickly from their cold" He paused for a moment looking like... he forgot something? "Oh, yeah! I totally had a cold yesterday. It was terrible." He gave me a sly look. No. He totally skipped school yesterday just because it was his fricken birthday. "NO. You didn't leave me here dying in this hell hole while you were celebrating your birthday." I tried to fake cry a little bit and look upset. His face softened and he looked sad. "I'm sorry Bell. I didn't know you would be this upset. Please don't be sad. I'll buy you fro yo." Haha. Sucker. "Thank you! And by the way," I said with a shy smile, "here is your birthday gift." I handed the small, wrapped box to him. He smiled a genuine smile and started to open the present. He took out the silver and grey bracelet staring at it. "I know it's not your birthday, and if you don't like it I ha-" I was cut off by him hugging me. Sparks flooded my body. Wait. Sparks? My thoughts were interrupted with him whispering, "Thank you. It's perfect."
