S A T U R D A Y

HE WAS AT THE BARSTOOL again. The same exact barstool as yesterday, in fact. The only difference is that he was paying more attention to his surroundings. The sounds of teacups clicking together, the taps of the keyboard from other students, occasionally yelling coming from the back, and the ding of the counter bell.

Anna, the barista from the day before was even astounded to see him again. "Oh, hey... do you come to ask for a second refund? I'll get my mom..." she trailed off as Alejandro shook his head. "Nah, just here to order," he reassured. That's just taking advantage. "Can I have three strawberry pastries?"

No tea?" she quirked an eyebrow as Alejandro nodded. "Still traumatized, I see." She chuckled, hastily writing it down. "It'll be quick!" she smiled, dashing away to the back-room like she was in a hurry. Alejandro furrowed his eyebrows but dismissed it. He drew out his laptop and notes (same as last time) and re-read what he wrote last time.

"Hi..." an uneasy voice interrupted his inner monologue. He glimpsed away from the blue screen, into the eyes of the infamous tea spiller. He wasn't wearing his glasses this time. There were strands of hair falling in front of his eyes. Tea spiller (Alvaro, he provided in his mind. He can't forget his face) didn't seem too certain to see him. He was holding the plate of pastries in both of his hands, Alejandro gingerly took it, placing it delicately onto the familiar quartz counter. He did that to ease Alvaro but it seemed to make him more uncomfortable.

"Thank you," the student gave a modest smile to the barista. Alvaro nodded, his hair flopping with it. "It's on the house."

Huh.

"Huh?"

"On the house--" Alvaro echoed. "No, thanks. You already apologized, no need for favors man." he waved it off. The barista looked at him like Alejandro was some kind of jagged puzzle piece that couldn't fit.

"You're turning down free-stuff," he said blankly.

"It's family-owned," Alejandro stated, biting into his pastry. Damn, these were delicious.

"Free. Stuff."

He paused to finish chewing. "Heard that." he shook his head, "I'm not gonna try to get you fired if you think that." The barista crossed his arms. "Okay, thanks," he murmured.

"You thought... I don't do that." he put his hands up. "You just messed up once."

"Yeah but..." the barista sighed. "This one time it's free. And the next time you buy tea."

Alejandro shook his head.

"Man, please." Alvaro sulked, brushing the hair out of his eyes. The hair fell back in place like it hadn't been moved. "Sure. I-- don't make a big deal out of it."

"Got it!" he said far too quickly.

"I'm serious." Ale said, taking another bite.

"I know." Alvaro grinned softly. "Enjoy your sweets." he gave a two-finger salute, walking away from the counters to a table of kids. He was seemingly being a genuine waiter by the way all the teens smiled at him. It was... charming. The barista smiled and laughed with them, with his little notepad taking their orders. Were his hands always a little shaky when he wrote?

Alvaro, who felt someone staring, glanced up. He met Alejandro's eyes as they were focused onto him, examining something. His coffee-colored eyes held an emotion that Alvaro couldn't describe. Maybe it was a plot of the light.

The daze was broken. 'It's rude to stare...' Ale thought, looking away. He tried to pretend like he hadn't been staring at all, glancing around the room like some frightened doe. He wasn't the best actor in the world. Why was he even staring in the first place? Ale ransacked his brain for the answer but it couldn't give it to him.

Eventually, he concluded on one. 'Because he was interesting.' it made sense. His brain replied with 'Yeah, it's interesting that he spilled tea on you that one time.' He ignored that thought, eating more of his sweets (pastries!). He should be focusing on work, and how red his face feels.

It still didn't make sense.
