CATALINA SWAN knew power long before it coursed through her veins. Long before she could wave a hand and bring a man to his knees, she could simply tilt her head and smile that smile that would do just the same.
She'd learnt there was power in beauty at a young age.
But there was power in intelligence and kindness and happiness; something it didn't take Cata long to realise, she was raised two doors down from her grandmother after all. A woman who read tarot cards and believed in souls more than anyone Cata had met since, who told her stories of witches and vampires and werewolves as the young girl stared up at her all doe eyed. Who wore leather jackets and red lipstick and had a weird knack for predicting the weather. She wanted to be just like her grandma when she grew up, something she found she had no choice in at the tender age of thirteen.
Everyone always expected a lot from Catalina Swan, most of all Grandma Swan - but sometimes she liked to remind everyone that she was just a girl. She was just a girl who sometimes said the wrong thing, and laughed too loudly and liked boys a little too much and played with their hearts until they couldn't tell when hers ended and theirs began (here lies Paul Lahote's heart, gone but never forgotten) and lied and lied again.
Charlie Swan had been proud of his eldest daughter since he met her, he needed no consolidation - his little girl was going to change the world (and even if she didn't? he'd still love her all the same).
You were the happiest baby - a smile brighter than the sun, my golden girl. Charlie would tell her when he drank a few too many beers, and she'd smile - taking the empty can from his hand. What's not to smile at? Lie and lie again - remember? No parent needs to know their child is upset, least of all Charlie Swan who would tear up the world for his daughters.
Catalina Swan was born just minutes before Isabella Swan. She didn't enter the world with a scream that would ricochet off the walls like her sister would, but with a smile and an attempt at a laugh as she was met with the sight of her father (who had a moustache even then). It was like she knew who he was, with his instantly adoring eyes while her mother lay exhausted in the bed. Of course I knew who you were Catalina had declared one night not too long ago you're my dad. Our souls know each other.
Charlie Swan held Catalina Swan as her sister was welcomed into the world, swaddled in a sweet white blanket that was still around the house somewhere. His hand cradled her against his chest, almost as big as her. My golden girl was so small I was scared I was going to squash you. And when Bella took her first breath her screams and cries bounced around the room, Cata smiled wider.
Isabella Swan did not allow her cries to be settled, her eyes darting around the room earnestly. She was looking for you. she's always looking for you.
And when Renee had finally relented in her desperate rocking of her younger child, Charlie stepped forward and placed his eldest and youngest together in the crib. And the cries ceased and Isabella smiled.
If our souls know each other yours are intertwined.
LET ME GET WHAT I WANT, THIS TIME.
