"Will Park Seonghwa, Kim Woojin, Bang Chan, Kim Hongjoong, Jeong Yunho, Lee Minho, Seo Changbin, Kang Yeosang, Choi San, Song Mingi, Hwang Hyunjin, Jung Wooyoung, Han Jisung, Lee Felix, Kim Seungmin, Choi Jongho, and Yang Jeongin, please report to the principal's office immediately? Senior boys to the principal's office immediately, thank you!"
The boys looked at one another, sharing confused and sassy looks within their groups.
"Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!" Chan shouted.
"Oy, oy, oy!" Felix responded.
Chan smirked. "I think we'll win this one."
"What? Just because you have more members and a little chant? We have a Yeosang. He's far better."
Felix snorted. "As if."
Woojin nudged him. "Shush. We don't even know what the competition is yet."
"Yeah," Jeongin chimed in. "Calm down, be civil."
"Be civil my ass," Minho whispered. Jeongin glared at him.
"I heard that."
"Good!"
Jeongin rolled his eyes. He whispered something to Jongho, who's eyes lit up. "Last one to the principal's office is a loser!"
The rest of the boys didn't waste any time sprinting down the hall leaving Jeongin and Jongho staring after them laughing. Jeongin wiped an imaginary tear from the edge of his eye. "Ah, they never learn."Jongho snorted and shook his head. "Yep," he said, popping the p. "Ok, let's go." The two headed towards a shortcut that was hidden behind one of the schools' many trophy cases. Being the school reporters had its perks, and those included being allowed inside the school after hours.
The duo had found several hidden passageways, perfect for eavesdropping on other conversations, and snooping through lockers.
As they suspected, they came out right in front of the school office and pushed the door open, sitting down on opposite sides of the room and trying to stifle their laughter as the others came in, noticeably disheveled.
"How?" Yeosang screamed. "You two were way behind us."
Jongho just laughed. "Nah, you guys just hate each other."
"That and we know how to get around."
Jongho wacked Jeongin in the stomach. "Shut up."
"Boys?" They turned to see the assistant principal standing there, smiling. "Come collect your forms."
They all glared at each other as they rushed to grab the forms, reaching over each other and elbowing each other until they were just one big tangled mess of limbs and papers. Felix wiggled his way out of the mess and facepalmed.
"Everyone here is an idiot."
"Says the one who is also an idiot," Jongho commented.
Felix made a punching motion and scowled. "Well, I'm off. See you all tomorrow."
The boy scurried out of the office and down the hall before the others could make it. If he could get to the front of the school first, the lunch ladies would give him the last of the ice cream left over from lunch. That was the only competition in which it was every man for himself. Felix took a sharp turn and leaped down the stairs to the second floor landing, then launched himself over the railing. If there was anything he had learned about Jeongin and Jongho, it was that no matter how many shortcuts they took, they couldn't beat jumping down the stairs.
Just as he expected, he got there first, and as he arrived, he tripped, falling over, and collapsing, slightly out of breath. The woman chuckled. "Here you go kid, and try not to trip over your feet when you come next time." Felix nodded and got to his feet, gingerly taking the small cardboard cup from her.
"Thanks!" he called as he ran off again. The woman just laughed and shook her head, turning as footsteps indicated that Yunho had arrived. His face dropped and he sighed.
"Felix got here first huh?"
She nodded. "Better luck next time."
"What next time? Todays the last day."
"Oh I know." she passed him a package of vanilla. "Don't tell anyone else, but I saved some for all of you. Going away treat. Now go home and sleep, you have to be ready for the games tomorrow, right?"
"Of course, thank you!" She smiled. No matter how rough the two groups got, they were always polite to the staff. It was something that she was very proud to see. She passed ice cream off to the other boys as they came through. She only wished their petty rivalry would go away when they went off to college. They had to learn to group up someday.
The janitor passed her and tipped his hat as he brought the mop back to the closet. He waved as she left and began his nightly routine. Cleaning supplies away, trays placed in the proper place, classroom doors locked, kitchen utensils in their bins, papers on the principal's desk, and bathrooms clean.
He smiled as he turned back towards the entry hall, waved goodbye one last time, then shut the lights off and locked the doors. If he hurried, he could get home before his wife put the last of the rice away.
The next morning, the entry hall was filled as students clamored, chattering, and filing into the courtyard. Behind the principal's podium, the seventeen boys were restless. Seonghwa laughed at Chan while he was fussing with his tie, sticking out his tongue. "Awww, is the wittle boy worried about his appearance?" he taunted in a baby voice.
Chan immediately stepped forward and pushed him back, Hongjoong, Yeosang, Seungmin and Minho joining the scuffle almost immediately.
"Hey, hey, hey!" Woojin pulled the boys apart, and tutted. "Don't fight, there are teachers here."
Chan scoffed and straightened his shirt. "I'll get you back for that."
"Not now," Woojin hissed.
A teacher came in and beckoned them to follow her and the boys marched up on stage and stood behind the principal smiling, pretending they hadn't just tried to kill each other a few minutes ago.
The principal raised his arms and smiled. "These are your senior boys. Let the games begin!"
They all took deep breaths, staring out at the cheering students and followed their principal to the front doors. They all stepped inside, and turned to watch as he locked the doors. He smiled. "See you in a week. May the best team win!" Hongjoong and Chan glared at each other. It was time.
