You are born with a mark of where your soulmate will first touch you, but only you can see it and your soulmate sees it once they touch you. After the first touch, everytime they touch you both feel a burning sensation of lust and love (depending on your age) but if a long period of time passes without contact with each other's mark, the marks will start to fade. When marks fade the bond between the two breaks, killing feelings between the two. Reasons why marks fade are: a long period of time passes without contact with each other's mark (this will slowly fade the mark but will not make the mark disappear completely, but it does leave your soulmate variable), your soulmate dies (you will no longer have a mark and all feelings disappear so you may continue with your life), or an act of betrayal (when caught in an act of betrayal of any kind the mark will fade immediately to a very light shade giving the person who betrayed their soulmate a deep amount of guilt, and the person who got betrayed with great depression. If no agreement is made the mark will fully fade, disappearing their feelings and giving permanent hatred between the two. The only way for the marks to return to normal is if both parties forgive and forget and reunite their bond.) Of course you aren't forced to love your soulmate you can always chose to stay friends, but most people don't see the need to stay friends.
