Fall was slowly leaving its mark on the world. By this time next week the trees would be bare and the ground coated in a blanket of browns, yellows, and oranges.
I was passing under the giant brick archway that marked the entrance to the Greenborough property. Upon which there was the mansion where I would be living for the foreseeable future.
I was nervous, that was obvious. This wasn't my first job as a caretaker, I was proudly experienced. But this job was special. The mansion and the miles of surrounding woods were owned by the rich and prestigious Miles J. Greenborough.
The bed-sick man I would be caring for.
I got out of the car, not sure where to park on the stone roundabout that ended their driveway.
The path led through a huge garden, where at the end two elderly stone statues sat on either side of the entrance like watchmen.
It was like a painting, pristine and perfect scenery, all the while overshadowed by the beauty of the otherworldly Greenborough house.
I reached for the huge brass knocker and let it drop twice. The echo could be heard for what seemed like an eternity. I straightened my small blue dress, suddenly feeling under professional compared to the rest of the house.
That feeling was immediately multiplied when a tall butler type man opened the door wearing a suit with all sorts of weird gold trinkets hanging from the vest pocket.
"Hi I'm Leah, Mr. Greenborough's new caretaker." I reached my hand out but when he didn't accept I shyly tucked it behind my back.
"Yes, I assumed you would pop up sooner or later. Luckily Mr. Greenborough is sleeping." He had a thick welsh accent that automatically made me feel dumber than him.
He introduced himself as Ludwig, the personal butler. "Mr. Greenborough is the Master of the house, and he should be addressed as such. The Greenborough estate has been owned by the family for more than one-hundred and fifty years, and it demands immense respect."
For the next fifteen minutes, Ludwig dragged me through the first floor running over all of the essentials. By the twenty minute mark we were back at the front door and I had broken a sweat.
The old man had a spring in his step that could only be matched by a pro football player.
"I will be up to the estate weekly to check on you and the progress of the Master. I'm sure you are fully aware that he is dying."
I nodded solemnly.
He smiled at me, "the Greenborough's have never been afraid of death. It isn't something that should be shyed away from or be sad about. You are to be employed here until the departure of Mr. Greenborough from this Earth."
"Where is everyone else?"
"Pardon?"
"Well you keep saying, 'the Greenborough family'. So that would mean there are more of you, right?"
He smiled knowingly like something funny had popped into his head, "oh trust me there are more people here than you may ever realize. I'm sure you will run into a few of them on your way about. Don't be shy, the family loves to have new members."
Leaving me with nothing but an oddly foreshadowing statement and few mock chores to get done, I was, for the first time, alone in the house.
Until I heard the unmistakable sound of heavy metal from somewhere in the upper floors.
