Hey, my name is Emerald-Rose Jennings. I’m 17 years old and just recently moved to, Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. My mother and I decided to move here to start a new beginning, to get away from my old town. Let’s just say, my mother and I didn’t have it easy after my dad left us. I was 13 when he left, and my mum was left to pick up the pieces. I really don’t know why he just up and left, I don’t ask mum either since she still gets upset about it.
Dad leaving and the problems I was having with school, it wasn’t exactly easy to handle. I’m not exactly the type of girl that a guy would want to date, I mean I’m tall, have long blonde curly hair, I have blue eyes but I was chubby, I had lots of pimples and because of that I would get teased and bullied a lot. They would call me an ‘ancient mammoth, whale, ugly, whore, waste of space.’ And a lot more, they say ‘Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words could never hurt me.’ Well words hurt me alright; I’d cry myself to sleep most nights.
There was only one thing that could make me smile, and that is my mum. She was there for me through everything, I told her everything. I can honestly say my mum is my best friend. Unlike me my mum is short, she has short strawberry blonde hair and she has clear skin. My mum doesn’t have many friends like me, but that’s okay as long as we have each other right? Mum works at a bakery in the middle of town, and I just got a job at the diner. The good thing is we both have Saturday and Sunday off, which means we have mummy daughter days. Except today we didn’t do anything due to me starting back at my new school tomorrow after the summer holidays.
I’m kind of nervous, upset and scared that no one will like me, so here I am about to tell mum how I feel about beginning at the new school. "Hey, um mum...” I said trying not to seem as nervous as I really was. "I'm kind of freaking out… I mean, about tomorrow. It’s a new day, new school, with no friends." I continued with a worried expression on my face, all I could think was what if they didn't like me. "Aww, baby girl, don’t worry about it! You’re beautiful! You'll make tons of friends in no time." she said with that smile she gives when she's really sure about something. "Thanks mummy, I love you. I’m going to bed, night and sweet dreams." I said giving her a kiss on the cheek, and then headed off to my bedroom.
I grabbed my pajamas and went for a shower, after I finished I got dressed then sat in front of my mirror so that I could braid my own hair. I lay down in bed turning on my side looking at the photo; it was a photo of mum and me on my 14th birthday. Despite what we have been through, I’m so thankful that I still have my mother by my side. I smile and turn off my lamp and I slowly start to fall asleep.
-Next day-
I woke up to mum shaking me "Emerald, time to hop up." she said shaking me a bit harder trying to get me to wake up. "Time to get up and get ready for school!" she said more sternly. I just turn over and groaned at her, pulling the blankets back over my head. "Fine, no more phone or laptop, oh and since you’re not getting up, I’m taking your demi Lovato CD's!" She says; now I know she was being serious as I could tell by the irritation in her voice. I sat up instantly, I don't care about my phone or laptop I didn't care about mum taking anything except my Demi Lovato CD’s, I’d do anything so that mum wouldn't take them away from me. I jumped out of bed, grabbed my school clothes then run to the bathroom.
Fifteen minutes later I walked back into my room shower, hairs done, make-ups done; my lunch is already packed in my bag. Omg! I nearly forgot to mention the bag mum got me for Christmas; it has Demi all over it!! For my birthday I want to go to her concert, it'd be amazing! I stepped in front of my body length mirror; my hair is naturally blonde and curly. So I decided to leave my hair out, well for today anyway. I had a little bit of foundation on, with baby-blue eye shadow, a light layer of eyeliner then the final touch, mascara.
Mum came back in, handing me back my phone and cd's. "Good girl, ready to leave now" she said fixing my shirt, I nearly forgot to mention, we don’t have to wear uniforms! "In a few minutes, I just need to text my old friends telling them I miss them.” I say grabbing my bag before walking down stairs to the lounge room. "Fine, I’ll go make a quick coffee" she said walking into the room next to me.
'Dear ruby, I miss you so much! I'm sorry that we left, but we had to. I love that we don’t have to wear uniform here! Well that’s only as long as you wear red, white and black or blue. They probably have an amazing principal! (: wish me luck, as I do to you. Bye gorgeous xo
P.s. I’ll try visiting you soon, Love you to the moon and back xo'I walk to the door, and mum follows knowing it was time to go. She drops me at school telling me to call if there's any trouble. You know how mums are, over protective but its okay I understand. Just then the bell ran and I turn and head for the office, I saw the principle and got my timetable, locker number and combination said a quick thank you and walked out of the office. I started walking to my first class; English, room 23A. I look around trying to find where I am, I start walking forward trying to remember the direction that the principle gave me.
