Level One
The Eiffel Tower
Paris, France
April 1st
1700 Hours
We all piled into the helicopter, Erica getting in last. But before anyone could close the door, a female figure emerged from behind the smoothie stand, with her gun trained on the helicopter. Jenny Lake.
She must have stayed on the ground, anticipating our escape. Her face was expressionless, and it seemed as though - from 50 yards away - her gun was aimed at me. I was too far away from the door to close it before she fired, and everyone else was behind me. She seemed to be contemplating whether or not to shoot me, but before she could come to a decision, a sedation dart plunged into her neck and she fell with a silent "thud". Her gun toppled out of her hand and went off as it hit the ground. Before anything else could happen, I shut the door and yelled to Alexander to go. "Who shot the sedation dart at Jenny", I spoke into the microphone on the headphones. "I don't know", Zoe spoke up," I assumed it was you". Everyone else seemed to be thinking the same thing, except Erica, who wore a blank expression, seemingly fixated on my chest. "Ben... Um... Your shirt.", she pointed, I looked at my shirt, confused, until I saw the red circle blooming on my abdomen. Blood. It took me a second before realizing it was Jenny's gun that went off before we evaded. At first, I was confused, wondering how it could have hit me. I knew from common sense that the chances of that happening were astronomical, yet, it did. I touched two fingers to my lower left chest, in shock, not believing what I saw. Then my vision got blurry, I looked back up to Erica, who was unbuckling her seat belt. I felt dizzy and started falling, the last thing I remember, Erica yelling my name and lunging to break my fall.
I woke up feeling terrible, bright lights in my face. I felt dirty. I scanned my surroundings, recognizing it to be a hospital room. I saw Erica sitting on a sofa by the window, reading a book. I assumed I made a noise waking up, because she looked up at me quickly, looking exhausted, but concerned. When she met my gaze, she attempted to keep her icy demeanor, but I saw a look of relief in her eyes. "took you long enough", she snapped. My vision was still blurry but I could see her smiling, a rare sight. I attempted to respond, only to feel like someone was sitting on my lungs. "I...I feel...", was all I could manage before wincing. She saw me clutch my chest and jumped to come help - or so I thought. "don't grab your wounds idiot", she barked, whilst prying my arms off of me, "you just got shot". "I forgot", I wheezed through the pain. "Here. Drink this", she said, handing me a glass of water off a nearby table. "Now that you're awake, we have to move." I almost choked on my water. "What!? Now?", I asked through newfound strength. "Yes.", She responded, "Did you forget that we're still fugitives? You getting shot didn't change that. Everyone else is on their way to Mexico, to get Grandpa. We decided that it was only practical for one person to stay with you. We're still in Paris, and we need to go. Now". She tossed me a small drawstring hospital bag, and I found my clothes in it. "OW!", I winced, looking down to see Erica jabbing a needle in my thigh. "This should help with the pain enough to get us out of here". Then she pulled the IV out of my wrist and helped me up to my feet." Get dressed quickly", she said, handing me the bag. I noticed I'd only been wearing a hospital gown with my boxers on under. I emptied the bag on the bed and pulled off the gown. It hurt, but whatever Erica stuck me with drowned out most of the pain. I looked to Erica expectantly and noticed the slightest hesitation before she turned around. This wouldn't have been disconcerting if it were anyone else. But Erica almost never let her guard down. "Sor...", she started then stopped abruptly. I knew she was starting to say "sorry", but I still reflexively responded "Did you say something?", I already had my pants on, when she responded, "No, I didn't. Are you done?". She asked, then turned around before I could give her an answer, as I was putting on my shirt. "I'm sure the staff called the authorities by now so the main exits are off-limits", she reported. "Ok.", I said, warily, realizing what she meant. She reached to her utility belt and retrieved a small grappling gun along with a spool of wire. She attached it to a compartment on the gun, then kicked the window and it shattered, falling to the grass below. I knew by looking to the ground that we were twelve stories up without having to count the windows. She looked at me and said, "Steady me while I shoot". I reluctantly grabbed her wrist and her hand did the same. She then leaned out of the window and deftly fired the gun 8 stories up and over the edge of the building. She came back in the window, attached the gun to her belt, and said, "Let's go". But before we could go, I heard banging coming from behind me. I looked to see two police officers trying to get in the locked door. Erica had used one of the hospital chairs to keep the door closed. She noticed the officers and said, "grab onto me". I wrapped my arms under hers locking my hands together, "You ready?", she asked vehemently. "Not at all" I responded warily. "Good.", and then she jumped.
My grip tightened around her, pushing her chest into mine. We were face to face, both of us looking up. I heard a click from the belt, and we started moving upwards. I tried to loosen my grip enough to keep from hurting her but to keep me from falling to certain death. "Thanks, Hercules", she wheezed sarcastically, "hard to breathe with you squeezing my lungs and all". I couldn't help but blush "Sorry, it's not every day you jump out of a window with no harness". She looked at me confused, "Really?", part of me wanted her to be joking, but then again, it was Erica Hale. We reached the ledge of the roof and clambered up and onto the helipad. "Do you know how to fly this thing?", I questioned as we both climbed into the Med-evac Chopper. "We're about to find out, I read the manual when we came into the hospital though". She said in a reassuring tone. I grimaced, praying I wouldn't die in a helicopter crash on top of a hospital, ironically. We took off and headed south in the stolen helicopter.
A few hours later, we landed the helicopter on a pier that was surrounded by forest. We entered the kiosk, only to find it empty. "Lucky break," I said, while Erica grabbed a handful of keys from the desk. We walk down the dock and clambered into a mid-sized boat, testing keys. After the fifth try, the engine roared to life and we took off. I've been on enough boats to know to brace myself when the boat takes off. I was surprised to see Erica caught off guard when she fell backward, right into me, almost knocking me over. I stumbled but caught myself and latched my arms under hers and helped her back to her feet. She didn't fully turn around when she said, "Thanks", but I saw her face flush red when she did.
Neither of us said anything for the next two and a half hours when we pulled to shore surrounded by forest for miles. I knew from my sense of direction that we were a good three hours of boating from civilization. I told Erica, and she said we would rest for a few hours but we would leave at 3 so to travel in the dark. We checked the boat for anything to sleep on but came up with only one blanket. We both paused, looking at the blanket, waiting for the other to say something. Finally, after a few seconds that seemed like hours, she said, "You sleep, I'll keep watch", and then she started to head to the front of the boat. Without realizing it, I reached out and grabbed her hand, "Wait, you sleep, I rested in the hospital already, I'm good". I hadn't let go of her hand and she was just staring into my eyes. "Okay", she said in an almost whisper, and then I handed her the cover and walked toward the front. "Ben.", Erica called from behind me. I didn't know what to expect, but when I turned around she lunged into me, wrapping her arms around my neck. She kissed me and all of my problems seemingly melted away. It was the second time we kissed, but given that there wasn't a nuclear bomb that could potentially vaporize us around, it was all the more surreal. When she pulled away, I was at a loss of words, but before I could start to say anything she said, "Shut up. And if you tell a soul about this, I'll-", "kill me, I know the drill "I cut her off and said with an irremovable smile plastered across my face. She rolled her eyes and turned around, I sat down, knowing that I'd once again, thawed the freezing cold exterior of the Ice Queen.
