She was fifteen. She had been asked to take a seat in the living room, along with her older sister Samantha, and her triplets Devin and Lindsey. None of them were aware of the circumstances, and not one of them would be able to prepare themselves for what Mrs Jardine had to say.
"Children, this isn't easy for me to tell you but, Ray... Your father... Well, he's not going to be," she inhaled calmly, though the misery in her eyes was more than evident, "around anymore."
As tears slowly filled her eyes she explained, "when we admitted him a few months back, it was already too late. The cancer won the battle."
Samantha nodded, unlikely to have yet registered the passing of her father.
Lindsey sniffed loudly before choking back sobs. She had always worn her heart upon her sleeve.
"No," Devin cried, "no, he's still alive. He has to be, mom," the boy's voice cracks before he attacks his mother in a sorrowful embrace.
Then there was Taylor. As the rest of her family came together in a loving hug, Tay paced quietly up the stairs into her bedroom, closing the door behind her. She refused to believe it.
Her father was a terribly kind soul, her inspiration and her muse. He had taught her how to play the violin as a young child, and he influenced much of her musical taste. Music was the unique bond between the two, not shared with any other of the Jardine family.
Tay's body shook violently as she gasped for air. She sat in a ball underneath her bed, and had no plans to leave this spot.
She struggled to comprehend how she would live her life without her father being there with her.
This was the end, she believed.
// two hours later //
"Taylor?" Her mother knocked upon her bedroom door.
"I don't want to talk." She muttered in return.
"Taylor I didn't get to finish, sweetheart. Please let me in?"
She hesitated for a moment before sighing, "yeah, whatever."
Mrs Jardine sat on the floor next to Tay, her eyes still glassy from crying.
"Honey pie, I know this is a hard time for all of us, and I know this probably isn't the best time to tell you this but it's now or never..."
Tay looked her mother in the eye, bracing herself for another bombshell.
"We're moving to Australia."

From the beginning of high school, Jenna had felt different, much like an outsider. The girls she was surrounded by were nice people, but their interests differed vastly from hers. They found joy in things like fashion, sports or even art, whereas Jenna's passion was music. Despite this, she always made it her responsibility to join all kinds of groups and get involved. Music had already become her escape, her reliable best friend when times got tough. She learned to play the guitar, drums and piano from a young age, and had been professionally coached in singing. As a child she enjoyed putting on small performances for her family with her sister Hannah.
Now, at 13, though she was involved with the school choir and vocal ensemble, she was much more interested in rock music, enjoying the works of bands such as Green Day, Blink-182 and Fall Out Boy.
Jenna found relief in writing and composing her own music, and hoped she could use it to get somewhere in the future.
She was seeing her friend Cam after school today, as she did every Friday. He attended the boys school next to hers and was in the year above her. He seemed to be the only one who understood her passion for music, the two sharing almost identical taste.
The bell finally sounded after a long period of maths, and Jenna was relieved.
"Time to get out of this hellhole," Amelia joked, the two picking up their books and heading to their lockers. Jen laughed and picked up her bag.
"I'll see you on Monday, Mills, I'll MSN you!" She ran excitedly down to the spot at the back of the school where she always met Cam.
As expected, he had been sitting on the fence waiting. He gave a wide grin when he saw Jenna, and she returned it with no hesitation.
The pair exchanged greetings and went on their way.
