The fact of the matter is Light Yagami never saw a notebook fall from the sky from his classroom window. Let alone a notebook with the power to take lives.
All that he found, was a normal notebook that a poor first year student had dropped in their hurry to class.

There was nothing particularly interesting about this notebook, but to Light, that couldn't be farther from the truth.
After carrying this book home, he sat at his desk watching the news. A local preschool school had been taken hostage by an armed mad man. Now, if you were to ask Light, he'd tell you that he picked up the notebook and wrote down the gunman's name. When in actuality, he did not do so until after the fact.
What really happened, while indeed strange, was not the work of a magic book. The gunman collapsed of a heart attack and died.
Light convinced himself he was the one who killed that man with this notebook that he had not even marked in.
This went on for months, he would hear of a criminal dying and write their name in his notebook internally taking credit for the ghastly deeds.
He was for the most part, quiet about the dark secret he conjured up, but there was one person, just one, who Light couldn't help but flaunt his achievements to.
A phycology student who went by L. Somehow Light had convinced himself that L was his greatest nemesis in his quest for godliness.
He would often approached him and ask him questions along the lines of "Have you found Kira yet?" or "how is the Kira case coming?" of course, there was no Kira, there was no death note, this was all just an elaborate story his mind had created in order to quench his raging god complex.
Now L, for what he lacked in social skills and boundaries, he made up for in intellect. He wasn't about to hand off this incredibly fascinating mental case to someone else. It wasn't every day that you met someone with not only narcissistic personality disorder, and schizophrenia, but also such a fully encompassing god complex.
On several occasions, Light would oh so carefully try to find out L's real name to no prevail. L supposed that if Light figured out his name and wrote it down only for nothing to happen, that Light would either stop believing the notebook was real or take matters into his own hands and kill him, two things L found very inconvenient.
Now L wasn't the only one playing along with Light's delusions. There was a girl, Misa Amane, in Light's year at school, who thought the idea of Kira was wonderful.
L could never tell if Misa truly believed Light, or if she just found the idea of dating a sociopath to be appealing. Either way, she was insane in L's eyes.
When Misa first showed up on Light's doorstep, she claimed to be the second Kira. Now you might be wondering: if there is no Kira, why is it that she knows about him?
You see, the answer is simpler than most would like to believe. Light was no good at being discrete. (A/N: he's shit at using his inside voice when he talks to Ryuk.) Light sat in the back of class near the window. Somehow this put him under the impression that he was harder to hear.
This however was not true.
If class was quiet enough, and you sat close enough, you could hear him whisper his plans to 'Ryuk', an imaginary figure he created to explain his schemes to.
