The water looks comforting.
Peaceful.
Its murky depths hold secrets, promises, answers.
It calls to you
A soulful song,
Drawing you to it.
It entices you.
Never before has darkness and mystery seemed so compelling.
It promises a reward, a granted wish.
It lures you to its surface.
The moonlight reflecting off the rippling surface.
The urge is irresistible.
You enter.
The water swirls around you.
Holding you, comforting you.
Like an old friend.
A lover?
You relax in the inky embrace,
The waves lapping over your body,
Blocking out the thoughts.
The calling continues.
"Come" it pulses,
Like a light in the darkness.
You look down.
You see the answers to your questions,
Solutions for your problems

Just out of reach.

You swim down.

The answers seem no closer
The solutions farther away.

Just a little farther.
You reach, grasping for answers.

You grab onto something.
It was not what you wanted.

Questions flood your mind, desires, wishes.

You can't take it.
You let go, floating upwards.

Your lungs feel like they are going to burst.

You break the surface, disrupting the calm.

Instead of answers, you leave with more questions,
scrambling away from the calls of the water.
You run.
You run and run, and don't look back.

An old fisherman once told me
"Don't go looking for answers in places where you don't belong.
You will only emerge with more questions.

That is, if you return at all".
