This just came to me, but what if someone wrote a story where the main character was secretly a robot built to defeat the villain? But, they wouldn't know until the end, where the villain reveals it to them. In the end, they end up sacrificing themselves, so all of their friends & allies start grieving. At the very end, it's revealed that the creator kept a second version of them in the event that the first one got destroyed. Then, while everyone gathers around them, the main character opens their eyes, but that's the end of the book. Something that could give hints to them being a robot could be no memories before a certain point in time, as well as them having random knowledge about things. Another thing could be that they don't seem to feel pain. I have no idea what the actual plot would be, but it's just an idea I had in mind.
