“Jason I have to get to class.” I insisted trying to tug my arm away from his grip, but it was too tight.
He knitted his eyebrows at me. “Can’t you skip it like you did yesterday?”
I shook my head unwillingly and told him, “I got into trouble with the school, and my mom’s pretty angry with me about it too.” I lied.
By the look in his coffee-tinted eyes I could tell he was tentative to release my arm. I rubbed the place where he had gripped me and turned to walk away.
“Mia wait –“ I swivelled my body around at the sound of my name. “There’s this really formal party tonight to celebrate the Lombardi’s success in their business with drugs. You’re supposed to take a date so I’m asking you to come with me.”
I could feel an unhealthy shade of rose appear in my cheeks so I attempted to hide it by smiling. “Uh – sure, I’d love to.”
Jason smiled and from the corner of my eye I could see one of the teacher’s on duty approach. “I’ll pick you up some time after school. I’ll be taking Tyler and Kyle with me too.” Jason mentioned rapidly.
Tyler sounded familiar, was is the same guy that had warned her to leave Bed-Stuy in that café? The one that looked exotic? And Kyle? I remember Finn mentioning he owed some guy called Kyle a lot of money.
“Is everything alright here?” My thoughts were interrupted by Mr Westcott’s voice. It was hoarse and deep, sounded like he was feeling a bit under the weather today. I nodded my head and exchanged glances with Jason. Mr Westcott peered over Jason, his eyebrows raised high. “Can I help you young man?”
“Uh – this is my cousin, he –“ I tried to quickly stutter an excusable answer out but nothing came out.
“I flew in from Canada this morning to surprise her.” Jason believably put on a fake smile. I smiled and tagged along and surprisingly Mr Westcott bought it. I eventually said bye to Jason and marched inside the building.
I saw a familiar face grinning at me nearby, it was tanner than before and I could instantly tell that this familiar-grinning face belonged to Julia. She had finally arrived from Greece and I hate to admit it but I missed her a lot.
“Hey stranger.” She greeted me with an embrace.
I squeezed her tightly. She was the only hope I had left of ever getting a normal teenage life. “I thought you were flying in tomorrow?”
Julia pulled away from the embrace and smiled wide. “I wanted to surprise you so…surprise!”
And then it hit me. A really good idea hit me. What if I took Julia along to that party with me? I don’t want to be the only girl who doesn’t know anyone there anyway.
“Well I have a surprise for you too.” I cheekily told her as I linked her arm and we started heading towards class. “My friend is going to this party and I’m his date so I want you to come with me.”
Julia paused and gave me an uncertain look. “Wait – date?”
I sighed, “It’s a formal party which means no hardcore partying. But –“ I said elongating my last word a little. Julia shot me an anticipated look so I laughed at her. “It means we can wear those dresses we never wore and it also means lots of champagne.”
“Hmm –“ I awaited her answer. “Alright I’ll go. Those dresses need wearing and I don’t want to be stuck at home unpacking all night.”
I hugged her again. “This is why I love you.”
“Yeah yeah, whatever.” She mused back.
“Oh you look lovely the both of you.”
I pushed one of Julia’s curls out of her face. “Thanks Mom but we’re not getting married so you can hold back the tears.”
