I place the piece of paper into a yellow tinted envelope before placing it in my backpack. I'm currently looking for a job, much to my boyfriend's disapproval, not that he knows about this one. You see, I was born and raised in Sydney, Australia, until three years ago when my older sister was sadly taken from us by the forceful claws of depression. I decided the day after her funeral that I needed a change of scenery. Toronto, Canada was where I ended up. However, due to the unplanned nature of my travels, I didn't have an house or apartment, I didn't have a job, I didn't have company. I was staying in a cheap motel for a good four weeks before I realised I couldn't maintain the payments necessary without a proper, paying job. I found a receptionist position for a man named Drew Cresent who owned a real estate firm. He was very considerate of my situation and offered me a place to stay. It was after staying with him for a few weeks that we developed this connection. I know now that he used my weakness to get to me. He told me that his brother passed away and I instantly felt connected to him. I recently found out that that wasn't true but he was just trying to empathise with me, right?
Anyway, our relationship progressed and he decided that I don't need a job, that he could support us both financially. Me agreeing to that arrangement was a big mistake. I've realised overtime that if I ever upset or disappoint him, he can take everything away from me. My 'home', my food, my clothes, my everything. I would end up on the streets with no one to support me. I had no friends, Drew doesn't like when he doesn't have my attention, and my family is on the other side of the world. I wouldn't have enough money to go back home because i have nothing. Every item that i call 'mine' is technically his.
A few months ago, I applied to a small, family owned salon about twenty minutes away from Drew's workplace. I planned a pitch, so to say, where I planned to explain to Drew that I could help pay for monthly expenses and how I would be close to his work and i could see him on lunch breaks and such. I felt this excitement that I hadn't felt since my sister passed. But when he heard that I was applying, he flipped. Why? I couldn't tell you, but he did. He yelled, he screamed, he hit. That was a first. But it was understandable, I had caught him off guard. I guess he likes knowing that he has this sense of control over me.
That was why he couldn't know that I applied for this job. He would be mad and definitely not approving. This job is for a set hairstylist, meaning i would be responsible for ensuring that cast for a TV show is ready for filming. I'm excited for this opportunity, it recently opened up as current hairstylist is unable to stay in Toronto. It's for a show named Riverdale, which I have heard of, but haven't looked into yet. What is most appealing is the hours are during Drew's working time, so he doesn't need to know. As well as this, the pay is pretty high. I will need to open an account to put all of it into, maybe then I can finally gain a sense of control back.
It was a few weeks later that I got the call. A man named Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa responded to my application, saying that he was excited to see me fill the role, starting the following week. Excitement was an understatement.
