I was walking to class the next morning when I saw Jack passed out, rubbish sprawled out around him and a dick drawn on his forehead. A group of asshats were picking on him when I walked up. I immediately recognized the dude with the long hair as Kyle, he was seen hanging around Alyssa quiet often. Sighing, I squat down in front o Jack, pulling a pair of scissors out of my back pocket as I cut him loose.
"You really should be more careful with who you hang out around," I say, offering him my hand as I get up off the ground.
Jack rolled his eyes. "No shit," he says, using me to pull himself up. "Do you just carry scissors around in your back pocket?" He asked, noticing the sharp cutting tools before I put them back away.
"You never know when some bitch is going to get all up in your face. I like to have a pair of scissors handy for when I inevitably cut off her hair." Though it made Jack laugh, I wasn't entirely kidding. One day, in middle school, this girl decided that she needed to use her irrelevant popularity to body-shame me. So when she went to the bathroom, I cornered her and cut off her hair. Suffice to say I got suspended, but my mother thought it was the funniest thing she'd ever heard. I got ice cream.
His laughter dying off, Jack wipes his hands off on his jeans. "Thanks for helping me out, Chandler, it's nice to know I have a friend like you watching me back." The brunette sent me a quick smile before he raced off in the opposite direction.
'Friend'? Was I his 'friend'? He only served for a purpose and when it was complete, I had no interest in continuing our friendship. But, then again, it might be nice to have friends. Thinking this over, I made my way to my next class.
_____"Today, class, we will be covering Panic disorders. Panic disorders are relatively common, especially among college students and the youth of today. Panic disorders range from a simple burst of panic every once and a while to an inability to properly cope in the outside world. Panic...."
I started droning out the nasally voice of my professor, scribbling down notes and sidebars from the lesson. I already knew quite a bit about the topic; it was one of the first disorders I studied. My thoughts were once again drawn to the topic of friendship.
I had very friends growing, the few of which I have continued to keep in contact with to this day. I didn't necessarily see Jack, or Randall for that matter, as friends, but more or less necessary relationships I need for my end goal. I had nothing against the two of them or forming lasting relationships, but I didn't see the point. As far as I could tell, we were nothing alike. Jack romanticizes the idea of joining the Order and Randall was all right goofy. I saw my self as a more pessimistic idealist; I leaned more towards the worst aspects of the world, while simultaneously seeing things for what they were. While people with conflicting world views could be friends, the whole process was tiresome and I was too lazy.
A series of alarms started going off, cutting the professor off mid-sentence. Everyone began getting up, not even bothering to let the professor dismiss them. Slowly, I began packing up my stuff and getting ready to leave when I get a notification chime on my phone, alerting me that I had gotten a text message. Already having a pretty go idea of who it was, I grab my phone, only to see a message from Randall on my screen.
|Randall|
Randall
wanna get a drink later?
[Read 12:14 AM]Pocketing my phone, I finish packing my stuff and get ready to leave. I send the professor a quick smile, darting out of the classroom as I make my way back to the dorms. Like I said before, I didn't have, nor need any friends here, so I just decide to turn in for the day. Besides, I'd been wanting to learn Arabic for a while.
