"Good morning Mr. Davis" Emmi, My assistant told me.
"Mornin' Emmi" I had briefcase in one hand and Starbucks in the other. I worked at Adams and Smiths law firm. I was one of their best lawyers or so they kept telling me. I walked into my office and not a minute later, Clent Adams called my office phone.
"Calvin, be in my office in five" Then he was gone. I sighed. Today I wish I was at home with my wife, Leila(layla). We had gotten married two years ago. As soon as I had graduated law school at 26. Leila was 26 now and a registered nurse at the local hospital. I took a sip of my coffee and made my way to Adams office.
"Cal, come in and take a seat" I did as I was instructed.
"I need you to head to California for a week or so and handle a case with our firm over there"
"Why cant they handle it over there?"
"Stupid I guess. Its been a few months with this case and nothings happened yet. So before Drew has a fit, I figured I'd send you down there to take care of it.
"Yeah, I don't see a problem. When do I leave?"
"Todays Tuesday, so probably Friday. Ill give you the files and you can take off till then and research then"
"Thanks Clent" I headed back to my office and looked over the files Adams gave me. Amanda Leewood was taking her daughter, Heather Moore, to court. Amanda was claiming Heather knew her husband physically and sexually abused her eldest son, Kane Moore. When he was 16 he apparently had enough and dropped out of school. He disappeared. Smart kid. Stupid mom. She stayed with her husband, Tyler Moore. They had another boy who was 5 years younger than his brother. He was now 14 which meant his brother was around 19. The younger boys name was Dalton.
Tyler disappeared a few years ago. Amanda claimed that after he left, Heather continued abusing Dalton. She didn't know about sexually but she saw bruises on the boy all the time. The FBI was still searching for Tyler. He had a very bad criminal history, that Clent didn't give me.
This case wasn't like my usual cases. I had done a shooting before. I guess Clent and Drew trusted me enough. I packed my files up and headed home. When I walked in the door, It was silent. Leila was always at work. I didn't complain because most of the time so was I. It was hard to see each other. I decided to call her and see if she was free.
"Hello?"
"Hey babe"
"Hey! Whatre you up to?"
"Im home. Wanted to see if you were free for dinner"
"I might be. Whyre you home hun?"
"I'm being sent to California for a case at their law firm there for a about a week. Give or take. Adams gave me till Friday off to do research. I can see why now. This case is crazy"
"Im so proud of you! Look Ill see if I can get off early tonight so I can see you some before you leave"
"Thanks and okay just let me know. Love you"
"Love you too"
Leila and I had met at college. I was working on my undergrad before I went to law school. We were both nerds. The ones who would study more. That's not what I had planned for myself at all when I was a teen. I wanted to be a rock star. Which was something no one knew but my parents. My dad found out and lets say that night wasn't pleasant.
(Flashback)
With my not swollen eye, I looked my dad in the eyes. I was 14 at the time. "No son of mine will be a faggot rock singer. You hear that boy. You have good enough grades. With my money you're getting into a law school. No discussion about"
