Jade felt tears well up in her eyes, knowing she would have to leave the town she grew up in. This time it wasn't some prank her father would tell.
She stood on the sidewalk in the rain, holding her mother's umbrella. Her mother had given her instructions to wait at the bus stop and hand them the student license she kept in her wallet.
The bus pulled up with lights that lit up the dark street of the neighborhood. Jade squinted as she got on and handed the driver her license. The driver gave her a concerned expression.
"That's your school?" He asked. Jade nodded. The man sighed. "Alright, hop on." Jade rolled her suitcase down the aisle, passing other kids who wore similar clothing.
She sat near the back of the bus in front of a group of talkative kids. She clutched tight onto her suitcase, she was already feeling homesick.
"I finally get to get away from my siblings!" One of the girls behind Jade exclaimed.
"You're lucky, I still have to return home during winter break" a boy replied.
"Oh please, two weeks ain't gonna effect ya" said another girl with an accent. Jade wondered how they could feel so calm about being taken away from a place they were so comfortable in. She couldn't make sense of it.
Jade was getting drowsy watching the raindrops slide down the bus's window. She laid her forehead against the glass, trying to block out the constant chatter of the kids.
The bus was now driving on a dirt path through large fields that led to a forest. The sun was starting to appear above the horizon allowing Jade to relax. She didn't feel safe in the dark.
They had now entered the forest, which held tall oak and pine trees. Making images on the window using her finger distracted Jade from her worries at the back of her head.
"Look at this school, it's huge!" Shouted a girl, making everyone jolt awake.
"That's right, we're here" said the bus driver. Jade narrowed her eyes and peered out the window to see them pulling up to a school made up of white stone, with a structure similar to a cathedral.
Her day had just begun.
