JAMIE
A heavy sigh escaped my lips as I glanced down at my silver wrist watch. The small, digital display blinked 12:15pm at me, a mocking reminder of how slowly times seemed to crawl on this particular day. It felt like an eternity since I dragged myself out of bed and into this sterile office environment.
My gaze drifted back to the computer screen, a futile attempt to distract myself from the relentless march of the clock. The thought of escaping this office at six o'clock, and sinking into the welcome embrace of Lacey's bar fifteen minutes later, was the only thing keeping my spirits afloat.
Friday nights at Lacey's, were a sacred ritual for Carmen, Ethan and me. We'd been an inseparable trio since the day we met.
"Jamie!"Harry Knight's voice cut through my daydreams, and I jerked my head up, startled. A stack of files were cradled in his arms, and his kind eyes met mine. "Do you mind doing some photocopying for me?"
A smile crept across my face. I appreciated his kind request. Despite being my boss, and technically, I was obliged to do his bidding as the personal assistant, Harry always made an effort to be considerate. He was a kind man, easy to work for, and definitely not in a way that sent shivers down my spine. At fifty - something, he was more like a friendly uncle than anything else.
"Sure, that's no trouble."I replied, my voice laced with a genuine enthusiasm. I reached out to take the files from him. "I'll get these done asap, Mr Knight."
He returned a smile, a crinkling forming in the corners of his eyes. "Thanks, Jamie." He said, turning to leave. Then, as if an afterthought, he turned back. "Remember, it's just Harry. Mr Knight is too formal."
I chuckled. "I will get used to that I promise."
As he disappeared down the hallway, I couldn't help but feel a surge of gratitude for having such a decent man as a boss. Harry was a breath of fresh air in this otherwise stifling environment.
I rested my back against the wall and folded my arms over my chest,as I let the photocopier do it's thing. I released a yawn of exhaustion, now feeling the tiredness of 4 hours sleep that I had last night.
I spent most of the night on my couch drinking glass after glass with my best friend/roommate Carmen. She was drowning her sorrows after the dumping of her life-and I was getting drunk on corner shop wine to keep her company. Because you know-That's what best friends do!
I haven't dated much, there's always been that fear of getting hurt-the fear of heart break! That's not saying that I'm a virgin or anything because I'm definitely not that. I've been with a few guys, but the relations that I've had were swift.
