I look out the window. The blue sky, the warm sun and no clouds looks inviting. However, the trees are so still it looks fake. The dead pine needles on the old porch make it look older than it really is. The black picnic table with a live flower throws it off. Grandma has always been big on gardening.
I hear sirens. They get louder as the police get closer. I know I should run. Try to get away before they arrive but I do not. "Is it worth it?" I wonder. Everything I know and love is gone. Only this house and its view is left. I hear cars pull up in the driveway.
I hear Vanessa in my head. "You can't run forever. Sometimes you have to face the truth."
"I am, Nessa. I am." I lean my forehead and touch the cool window. Despair fills my soul. I am done running. I will suffer the consequences for killing the only thing that ever matter in my life, "You, Nessa. I'm sorry." I whisper as the cops come and take me away.
