The earth, as we know it best rumbled in the darkness of the early morning. Terrifying sounds echoed through the empty streets as much loved homes swayed to and fro with the motion of the earth. Shaken awake, families huddled under door frames and kitchen tables, fearing nature could destroy them in an instant. Like a loose ball, people and their belongings were tossed around, helpless and scared.
As if a jumbo jet dive bombed the city, walls shuddered and creaked, breaking away from their fixtures and crashed to the ground. The only sound heard was the screeching and grinding of the ground moving underneath innocent feet as people tried to escape the unnatural movement and get away from the firing line as buildings and homes tumbled away before them.
Long seconds passed as this horrible event carried on, knocking away unstable objects, crushing them to the ground. Deep below, tectonic plates moved creating the disaster above, causing the earth to resemble the veins in our bodies as the ground was split apart, creating trenches through the main street of New Zealand's second largest city.
It was not until the strong rocking had stopped, that residents were able to witness the tragedy of their City. Historical buildings were now broken into millions of pieces, scattered among people's belongings and bricks off nearby buildings. Cars were deeply hidden beneath debris in the deserted streets of Christchurch. It was not until people looked around, that they realised a natural event had just unexpectedly taken place.
Aftershocks continue to destroy unstable buildings, and continue to shake the nerves of Christchurch's society. With just a few short minutes, nature was able to destroy not only homes and buildings, but the land itself. Five hours before, people dinned in restaurants with their loved ones, or sat at home and shared their delights of a well known Rugby team winning their game. But five hours after, people were realising the devastation that hadn't yet sunken in of how in such a short time, their lives were suddenly changed for a long period to come. Blessed together as a society, that not one member had lost their lives in this horrible tragedy.
