Kenzie's POV

I sat on the couch looking out the window to the park. Our apartment faced a massive park with open space overlooking a reservoir in the distance. My phone vibrated for what seemed like the fiftieth time today. I looked down and groaned to see it was from the same person again. I ignored the message but he was desperate and began calling. Sighing in frustration, I answered. “What? What do you want now?”

“I want to talk to you Kenz.”

“Josh, I told you I don’t want to talk to you until I’m ready.”

“Yeah and when will that be? Tomorrow? In a week? A year? I can’t keep waiting Kenzie, I want an answer. I miss you too much to be waiting.”

I rubbed my face feeling that annoying feeling in my stomach. “I will call you when I am ready. Which isn’t anytime soon.”

“I’m not leaving you alone till I get an answer.”

I stood by the window shaking my head. “You want an answer? Sure I’ll give you one. Don’t call me. Stop trying to get in contact with me. We broke up for a specific reason or did you forget?”

“I remember and I want to work things out with you Kenzie. I want us to try again.” Josh pleaded.

“I moved Josh. I’m starting over to get life under control. Besides, you’re almost a year too late for trying to fix things and my heart isn’t healed from you breaking it yet.” Silence on the other end gave me the cue to hang up. “Have a good life Josh. Please don’t call me again.”

I hung up and groaned. A thud on the floor brought my attention to Ashlie hovering over an empty box. “Guess who just emptied her last box? That’s right, this girl! Hold your applause please.”

I couldn’t help but smile and sit on the couch. “You finally unpacked your last box?”

Ashlie placed her hands on her hips and grinned. “Took me six months but I finished! Posters are all on the wall, closet and drawers organized, desk perfect too. I feel great!”

“I’m glad! Now wait till your room is all messy again,” I winked.

“Whatever!” Ashlie laughed. I gave her a small smile and then she looked at me seriously before sitting down next to me. “Is everything alright?”

I nodded. “Yep! Just peachy!”

Ashlie gave me a motherly look. “Kenzie I know when you are faking a smile and your happiness. What’s wrong?”

I let out a breath before unlocking my phone and showing her Josh’s texts. Ashlie frowned immediately but read through them.

“Why didn’t you tell me he has been texting you still?” She asked.

“I didn’t want you to worry. I have been ignoring him.”

“But he has called you too and you answered three times. Today, last month and a month before that. You guys broke up 8 months ago, why are you still talking to him? I thought you wanted to forget about him?”

I grabbed my phone and locked it. “I know Ash I know. It’s not easy. He was a big part of my life for three years. You don’t have to worry because I told him not to call me or contact me anymore.”

I looked up from staring at my phone to her. She looked at me concerned. “Kenz you haven’t really spoken much about what happened between you two? Do you wanna talk about it?”

I smiled at her. “No, I’m fine. It’s in the past anyways.”

“Are you sure? Venting could help.”
