I awoke to darkness. Alex was still asleep nextto me. I got up, pushing the blanket of the pillow fort back to the couch.

"Hey. Wake up." I nudge Alex with my socked foot. He groans and flips over onto his side. "No, up." I lean down and blow on his eyes, causing him to quickly wake.

"Gah! What the heck!" He yelps in surprise and sits up, rubbing his eyes.

"Good evening, sleepyhead." I joke, stretching. "That was a nice nap." I check my phone, it's 11:42. "A nice seven hour nap! We slept for seven hours in the middle of the day. Good thing my mum is out of town or else she would be livid." I chuckle.

"I had the best dream." Alex interrupts, standing and grabbing my shoulders and shaking me. "We ran away to the countryside and lived as hermits in a cottage and we made friends with deer and frogs.... Oh my god!" He shouts, startling me. "We should run away!" I stare at him, confused.

"What-" I start. Alex cuts me off.

"I mean, we're in grade twelve and school ends in two months, so we pretty much have nothing to lose! I mean, we were both planning on not going to university, right? And you hate everyone at school, and it would get you away from Jason!" He stops and grins, waiting for my response.

"I- yeah! That's actually a really good idea. I have some money saved up, so we can get a train ride! We should go tomorrow!"

"Yes! You're the best, Milo!" Alex bursts with excitement, pulling me into a tight hug then dancing me around the room. We laugh together before he lets me go, but keeps holding my hands. He spins me around and we fall onto the remains of our pillow fort. "Shoot, I should get home." Alex says, looking at his phone. "Thirty missed calls from my mum. I'll come pick you up tomorrow at nine, then we can go. See you!" He gives me a quick hug before leaving me in the dark alone.

I let out a squeal of excitement. I've never done anything this spontaneous before! I'm so excited to start my new life in the country with my best friend.

Best friend? You've gotta be joking. I was so oblivious back then. 18 year old me had no idea what his future is going to be like.
