“I will be back before you know it.”

He promised, and she knew when he promised her something, he will never run from that promise. He will be back.

She nodded, brushing the auburn hair away from his forehead before pulling his head down to hers, pressing her lips against his in a ‘see you soon’ kiss, which he returned while he wrapped his arms around her waist.

They had been in a relationship for five months now, and they spent every minute of it together, rarely apart expect when it was really urgent, like now for the example.

Hans had to go on a plane to meet his Father, a family business so urgent he really need to go and leave her behind. Just a week after he proposed her and slip the engagement ring around her finger.

She didn’t particularly like it, the idea of him leaving, but what could she do? He must go. The fact that it was a six months trip was the one bothering her.

He lifted her up, not finding a problem as he was a muscular man and was once in the military, holding her securely while she wrapped her legs around his waist; thankfully she was wearing jeans instead of a dress.

“Now, when I come back my love, I bring your wedding ring.” He told her, smiling as the tip of their nose touched against each other.

“Okay.” she whispered, twirling his hair around her finger. “Have a safe trip, Hans.”

The crystal vase she was holding slipped through her grasp when the news came up on the TV, shattering into gleaming pieces on the wood flooring.

The plane flying from Denmark has crashed, lost in the sea.

The plane Hans was supposed to be in…

She had been preparing around the house they were living together, excited for this was the day she would finally be reunited with her love.

Her hands were shaking so badly it was such a struggle to go through her purse, searching for her phone. When she finally got it, she opened the last message he sent her last night.

I’m coming home tomorrow. Can’t wait to see you again, I missed you so much. Love you.

She could feel her head spinning, placing a hand on a nearby table to steady herself while the other travelled down to the underside of her growing stomach.

No, no, no, no!

It can’t be; it just can’t. This is just a nightmare and she just need to wake up. He will be there with her when she wakes up, never leaving her side, spending every minute with her, watching the child they created together grow inside her.

But when her phone buzzed and she picked up, the voice of her sister’s boyfriend coming from the other end of the call, telling her how sorry he was about what happened, that the police and the airline has called him because he was Hans’ close friend, she just slid onto the ground, back pressed firmly against the wall.

It was true, all of it was true. It was not some sick, twisted nightmare where she could wake up and forget it all. He was really gone, leaving her and her child alone.

She didn’t know how long she had been sitting there, in a state of shock, no word coming from her lips as her body kept shaking; but it was long enough for her sister and her boyfriend to come, luckily they had a spare key to the house for Elsa did not feel like she could move from her spot now.

It was after her sister sat beside her, arms wrapped around her shoulders, when her tears finally came spilling from her eyes and onto her sister’s shoulder as she clung onto her.

He has promised.

And he broke that promise.
