BEEP BEEP BEEP BE-

The alarm clock was turned off by Vash and he got out of bed to get started with his day. He looked at the notepad on the table next to his bed. There was written a schedule, a list of things he needed to do that day. The sole thing holding his life together now as things had become quite complicated.

Nevermind that right now, right now is the morning routine! It's quite simple actually, all he had to do was wake up (check!), go to the bathroom (check!), exercise (check!), shower(check!), wake up the "demon"- It was definitely his least favorite part of the routine, but oh well, had to be done.

He exited his room and walked towards the end of the hallway where there was a closet. Now the closet was definitely emitting an eerie aura, it was like something out of a horror movie. In fact if this was a horror movie, the audience would be yelling at Vash, about how much of a fool he is for getting closer to this certainly evil darkness. This closeted evil of doom, the thing that contained the "demon".

He reached the closet but hesitated to open it, briefly remembering the consequences of said action. After so many incidents, he had come up with the ultimate plan! This time he would knock.

Knock. Knock.

[No answer]

Well that didn't work. So, he grabbed the handle and slowly, carefully, opened the door slightly and waited.

'Well usually he attacks me right about now'

Seeing no other option, he opened the closet and in it was-! A teenage boy sleeping on the floor using a red jacket as a blanket. Sleeping? Sleeping. Well actually he looked dead. Like really dead. Like as dead as a corpse dead. Wait-

"Uhhhhh"

Did he have a corpse in his closet? How long had he been dead? No, he couldn't be dead, people don't just die from one day to the other. Right? He to make sure the boy wasn't dead. And so he did what any reasonable person would in this situation. He shook the boy like a maraca.

And then promptly felt a wave of pain throughout his body. Turns out the boy was not dead and did not appreciate being handled like a Mexican musical instrument. Who could have guessed? Certainly not Vash. By the time the pain had worn off, the closet had once been closed again. Frustrated Vash tried opening the door once again only to find it locked.

"How do you even lock a closet??!"

"Wouldn't you like to know, blonde boy?"

Annoyed Vash shook the door handle. He knocked on the door a few more times, then decided that he should use a more tactical approach to get the boy to open the closet. A little thing called reasoning.

"Legato, come on, we go through this every day. Why can't you just open up?"

"..."

Vash stopped to briefly think of how much of a mess his life had become. It had been exactly 27 days, 9 hours, 35 minutes and 42 seconds (and counting) since the incident that 1) almost destroyed an entire city 2) had left his brother in a coma 3) left Vash to care for an edgy emo child that absolutely hated him.

Legato was an absolutely nightmare to have around. He might as well be a demon. Not only would he go against everything he said he would find ways to "torture" Vash to bring him internal pain and suffering.
At first though, Vash had just seen a child that needed to be taken care of. To be saved from the hands of his evil twin brother.

He soon found out that the "child" was totally insane. He had a strong love-? adoration? loyalty for his brother Knives and shared his twisted way of thinking. Great. How peachy. Even more great was that this child possessed a power Vash wasn't quite sure how it work, just that it brought him pain, a lot of it. Amazing. Truly wonderous.

He should have heeded Doctor Conrad's warnings.

But it was too late now, Legato wasn't an item he could return at the retail shop. He could only imagine what horror the boy would bring to the average family if he put him up for adoption. How catastrophic it would be if Vash let him out and about in the streets.

So he was stuck with him.

Ah but the boy had a weakness, a weakness Vash would try to exploit.
He had asked the doctor if there was anything Legato liked other than Knives. Food apparently, he was quite the the glutton.

But Legato had declined Vash's meals and had basically starved himself. But perhaps today was the day. The day Legato accepted his offer and ate a civil meal like a normal person instead of roaming around at night eating packs of uncooked hotdogs and drinking entire bottles of liquid ibuprofen for breakfast.

Breakfast.

"How about breakfast?"

"..."

The door slowly opened, the boy now in full view. His blue hair was messy and tangled, golden eyes heavy with exhaustion. His body skinny, starting to lose mass as he rarely ate. No wonder he had looked dead.

It seems though that he was finally warming up to Vash. Or at least that's what Vash thought. In reality, Legato's was just hungry and delusional, previously having a vision in which the Pancake God had spoken to him. He had listened intently as the Pancake God told him about the hidden pancake mix behind the macaroni box. He then passed out of exhaustion and slept for the first time in 3 days.

"What do you want-"

"Death." Legato said so genuinely it was concerning.

"To eat. What do you want to eat?" he sighed. It was going to be another long morning.

"What do you have to eat?" Legato said with unfocused eyes still thinking of the Pancake God's sweet promise.

"Eggs and donuts!" Vash said happily in an attempt to cheer up the situation.

"..." Legato saw right through the happy go lucky persona Vash would put on.

"Well that's all I got! What? What did Knives feed you?"

"Sheet music." he deadpanned.

"Well I don't have any sh-" Vash stopped as the joke set in. Wow. Apparently Legato had a sense of humor when he was hungry and delusional.

Vash let out a small laugh and then unwisely sat down next to Legato. Big mistake. Legato ran out of the closet uncomfortable that his personal space had been invaded.

'This my chance to get away' thought Legato.

Vash aware of the boy's intentions grabbed his wrist to stop him from running any further. Unfortunately, Legato was also uncomfortable with physical contact and this led to him sending a painful impluse to Vash's legs making him trip and fall. Even more unfortunate was that they were both near the stairs, and Vash took Legato with him as he fell and together they fell down the stairs.

'We still need to work in the communication department huh?' Vash thought, then proceeded to pass out for some reason.

Despite being sleep deprived and malnourished, Legato was miraculously unharmed and unaffected. He simply got up and headed towards the kitchen into the pantry. Moving aside a macaroni box, be found a blueberry pancake mix. A single tear slid down his face, the Pancake God had not lied to him.
With this treasure in his hands Legato went to the kitchen and to make his pancakes. All the necessary side ingredients were available, just like the Pancake God foretold.

He used the entire box which produced a hefty amount of pancakes. Yes, Legato did plan on eating all 32 pancakes. And no it was not a good idea. But Legato didn't care what was considered healthy. He ate his pancakes all the which Vash laid in the floor still unconscious.

'I'm going to find Master Knives' Legato thought as he shoved a fork full of pancake in his mouth.
