tam
"stina please pretend we're having a normal conversation," i told my best friend.
"tam, what's-"
"so how was shoe shopping?" i asked, passive-agressively prompting her into a conversation.
"oh, it was good. i got some new heels for my date tomorrow," she replied, catching on as i looked partially in the direction of keefe sencen.
he was approaching us.
"oh, with maruca? that must be exciting," i slip into a normal tone of voice rather than the louder, prompting tone.
"yeah! i'm really excited," she gave me a toothy grin. she's such a dork.
"heyyyyy, tam!" keefe's voice rang out. he had been closer than i thought.
"hey, keefe," i greet with a sigh.
"how's it going? heard your sister got a job at the bookstore. she doing well?" he asked. god, he's so thoughtful and concerned.
"it's going well. she's doing well at her job. how are you?"
right as i asked that, the bell rang.
"i'm doing pretty well, but i gotta blast. sophie'll kill me if i'm not in class." he departed with a wave.
"you're a lovesick fool," stina said, elbowing me as we walked to our next class.
"it's too cliche. i'm not in love," i told her. under my breath, i muttered, "or at least, i won't say it."

i felt horrible as tam approached me. my head was spinning and i felt absolutely worthless.
"hey. you look cold," he told me.
"i'm fi-"
"take this. for my favorite person," he said as he handed me his dark cardigan. he had more love in his eyes than my dad had in my life.
"thank you, love." i leaned forward, planting a soft kiss on his lips as i slipped my arms into the sleeves.
"my pleasure."

keefe sat across from me in the diner. his eyes, his hair, his smile, all breathtaking.
"i'm so into you. you take my breath away," i murmur.
"i feel the same my darling."
just then, our phones pinged simultaneously.
"oh no. i gotta blast," i stood up apologetically, leaving two twenties on the table. "i'm so sorry, i'll make it up to you later, i've-"
"darling, it's alright. you have to go help your sister. i'd do the same for sophie. i love you," he told me, his eyes soft and his voice quiet.
"i love you too," i tell him before leaving quickly.

tam was by the lake. i heard soft sobs from his form.
"hey, darling, what's wrong?" i asked.
"nothing," he sniffled. "just... anxiety."
"was it something i said to make you feel like you're a burden?" i asked softly.
"no, it's more... i'm scared of the woods and then linh asked me to go with her and i felt bad about it," he answered, laughing a bit.
"darling, you're allowed to have fears. now, come on. sophie made spaghetti."
