"Aunt Gretchen I'm leaving now! I'm taking Mika! I'll be back at three!" My voice rang loud and clear as I trotted down the small staircase of the narrow apartment. Grabbing my duffel bag, I pursed my lips together and whistled, calling my Aunt and Uncle's pet. Mika, the devilish monkey that my uncle babied all the time, took her time answering my call. She waddled over, almost glaring at me before approaching me.
I got down on my knees. "Mika up!" I commanded. She looked at me for a moment, then followed the command and hopped up into my shoulder. I started walking out the door when my cousin stopped me.
"Ashlynn! You forgot the card table and a deck of cards!" Greta, my cousin, called out after me. She soon came into view, her white blonde hair pulled into a high-set ponytail. Greta and I look similar, with our freckles and matching green eyes. But her face is slightly sharper than mine, she's about two inches taller, and she has wavy hair instead of the dark blonde tight curls that I have.
She had my small card table tucked beneath her arm and a pack of playing cards in her hand. "You want me to carry it down for you?" She asked me. Nodding, I began walking out to the hallway that held the other apartments, and an elevator at the end. Walking out, Greta yelled at her mother, my aunt, that she was helping me load the car and would be back in a minute. We walked down the hallway, the noise of the shuffling of my duffel bag filling the silence.
"So how's this magic thing working out for you?" Greta questioned. She never came to my street performances, only listened to me talk about them. She let me tell her how badly I wanted to be a great magician and escape artist like the famed Houdini, or show her a new magic trick I leaned. Greta was always there to listen to my dreams, help me with my magic, and just be the friend I needed. Ever since she was 13 and I was 14, we'd stuck together.
"It's going fine, I guess." I mumbled running a hand over my long curly hair. "It's not like I'm going to Vegas in the near future or anything thought." Pushing the down button on the elevator, we stood there in silence for a while. Mika pulled at my maroon beanie that I had on. "Mika!"
Greta laughed and took the beanie away from the little devil. Putting it back on my head, the elevator dinged and we got on. It was a bit of a struggle to get on with all of the stuff, but we got in with room to spare. Greta, being one to talk all the time, chattered mindlessly during the ride down.
"So how much money do you usually take in? Do you get a lot of attention? I like your outfit. Do you ever see any cute guys? Can you show me that one trick again? How do you-" I put up my hand and covered her mouth.
"Would you like to come and see for yourself?" Greta gave it a thought. She huffed, then turned to me.
"I have a date with Dustin today. Maybe tomorrow or some other time 'k Ash?" She smiled her blinding white smile and the elevator door opened. Dustin was her boyfriend of 3 years, and I'm pretty sure they're going to get married someday. Me, I'm just going to be a old single cat lady for the rest of my life. We walked out of the lobby to my car, a white Ford that has more miles on it than a Walmart delivery truck. Unlocking the car, we loaded the card table into the back, where my other props were sitting.
"Have fun on your date." I told Greta "Don't be stupid." She rolled her eyes at me and sighed.
"Just because you're a year older than me doesn't make you my mother." She's 17, and she's like my sister to me. She shut the back door and put a small hat onto Mika's head before saying, "see you later Ash. Don't you do anything stupid or I'll tell mom." Laughing she walked away, and I started the car up and drove away to the place where I always put on my magic show.

After about ten minutes, I arrive at Brooklyn, with the busy cars and occupied shoppers. Pulling over on the side of the street, I started to unpack my car and set up on the corner of 23rd and North. I put up the card table, set out the cards, yada yada yah. Mika, decked out in her cute little hat, started to walk around the little table and got some people's attention. They stopped and fawned over how cute she was, and gave her coins and dollars. She would tip her hat to them, and place the money in a little jar that she had. I soon had a small crowd that had formed, and I began the show."Good afternoon ladies and gents! I have here an ordinary 2 litter of Coke." I held up the pop bottle. "Now could I have a volunteer? How about you young man?" A little boy with a bright yellow shirt on jumped up and down in excitement. He came up to me and said his name was Drew.
"Now Drew, do you know what happens when you shake pop?" I asked him.
He nodded. "It gets like a volcano."
I started shaking the bottle. "So you're telling me that shaking this will 'make it like a volcano?' So should I open it?" I asked him. He smiled big and adorably and giggle out a 'no.' "Let's see what happens," I told the crowd. Opening the bottle, instead of a fountain of pop, a colorful scarf came out. 'Ooo's' and 'ahh's' came from the growing amount of people.
Drew giggle in wonder. Picking up the scarf I opened my mouth in pretend astonishment. "Now Drew, I don't think that was supposed to happen!" I took the scarf and stuffed it in my hand. "Drew will you please blow on my hand for me?" After he blew on my hand, I opened it up and showed the crowd. The scarf had disappeared. Drew once again, giggled in delight.
"Now where did that scarf go?" I asked the audience. Then on que, Mika hopped onto my shoulder, wearing the scarf. Clapping filled the street. The show goes on, people awed by the tricks. A hour and a half later, I thank everyone for coming, and Mika takes people's donations and puts them in her jar.
I started to pack up my stuff. I folded the card table, collected all the props, and then I got Mika in the car. Grabbing her hat really quick I put the duplicate of the scarf from the Coke trick back into her hat so I wouldn't forget the next time I preformed that trick.
"You know that to the trained eye, you can see the duplicate of the scarf shoved into the monkey's hat," a Brooklyn accent says. I look up from packing up my stuff. A guy who's way taller than me hovers in front of me, with a gray shirt and a leather jacket over it. The March wind blows at his brown hair, and his eyes are the color of lightened coffee. The first thing I noticed was the fact that Greta would call him a 'Grade A hottie' because he was indeed a total hottie. He had this great jawline, thick eyebrows, and this adorable dorky grin. He runs a hand threw his hair. "I'm Jack by the way."
I smile at him, feeling my checks turn a shade redder than I would like. He was really really really cute. "I'm Ashlynn." It came out barely a whisper. "And my monkey is Mika."
That was such a dumb thing to say.
He smiles and sort of laughs. "I didn't think I could find a monkey with a hat in New York."
I smile and laugh back nervously. He took a step closer to me and picked up the deck of cards on the table. "Do you preform magic?" I ask out of curiosity. Once again he made me melt at that darn smile. He looked back at the cards and began to shuffle them.
"I do little tricks here and there. Sleight of hand stuff ya know?" He shuffled the cards and then put them back on the table. "I could show you a trick now if you'd like." He reached out his empty hand into the air and a single card came out. It was a seven of diamonds. He made sure I saw the card, then wrapping his hand around it, blew into his hand. When he opened his hand, there was nothing.
I smiled at his game. Greta would have to know all about Jack when I got home. He then blew once again into his hand to reveal a beautiful red rose. Handing it to me, he gently said, "I'll see you around Ashlynn." Walking away, he turned around and smiled once again, and threw the seven of diamonds at me. It landed at my feet, and on the back was a smiley face. Laughing to myself and picking up the smily card, I loaded the car and drove away.

So that was chapter one. It was going to be shorter, but I got 8 views in a week so I thought it should be longer. It wasn't my best chapter ever, The first chapter is always not my strong point, so if you'll stay with me it'll get interesting in 2-3 chapters. I had trouble coming up with a beginning, but I think this will do. The picture at the top is supposed to move, but if it doesn't it's Dave Franco (Jack wilder) laughing. He's just to cute for his own good. Please leave a comment and tell me what you think! And vote if you liked it if you don't want to comment. Or both. Thanks again! -fangirl9943😘
