Okay, well this seems like it's a long chapter. At least when I highlighted it and copied it from my word document...Hope you can bear through it. Here's hoping.

Chapter One

“Maddie.”

I shoved my hands deeper into the front pockets of my jeans. Staring at my converse sneakers as they avoided the deep grooves cut into the sidewalk my long dark hair rustled in the breeze. A few strands stuck to my strawberry lip gloss covered lips.

“Maddie! Wait up!”

I stopped and looked up.

“Maddie!” I turned around to see my best friend Callie running to catch up with me, her blonde hair flowing behind her like a silk cape.

She stopped beside me and put her hands on her knees, breathing deeply. Her backpack slipped off her shoulder onto the ground. She gazed up at me and between breaths said, “Did you hear me calling after you? I’ve been trying to get your attention for the past two blocks! And it doesn’t help that it was all up hill!”

“Sorry,” I apologized. I brushed my hair out of my face. “I didn’t hear you calling.”

Callie stood up and wiped her hands on her jeans. “Well that doesn’t surprise me. Your head’s always up in the clouds.” She smiled and shifted her backpack back onto her shoulder. “Come on.” She grabbed my arm and started to pull me in the direction we were headed.

“So I told him that I’d consider going out with him again but only if he’d tell all his admirers to back off and that he has a girlfriend,” Callie was saying. “I don’t want a repeat of last time, you know. I mean, it’s not his fault he’s so desirable but really he should have known better.” She shook her head.

I smiled at her. “You know Josh loves you. He practically worships you at your feet.”

“True,” Callie giggled. “Anyways, what are we going to do about you this year?”

I jerked my head up to look at her. “What do you mean?”

She sighed. “Maddie, you know what I mean. You broke up with Greg a year and a half ago. You need to get out, explore the market, play the field. Anything except what you’ve been doing.”

“And what have I been doing?” I asked.

“Nothing and that’s the problem. Guys flirt with you all the time and you just don’t notice it. It’s like you got blinders on or something.” She shrugged. “You’ve been such a homebody.”

“That’s not true.”

“What did you do in the past week?”

I thought about it then shuddered. Callie laughed sadly. She was right!

I looked at her. “Please help me!”

She put her arm around my shoulders and pulled me close. “Of course. That’s what best friends are for.”

We walked onto the school campus and I looked around.

There were students entering the building and some trying to prolong the moment by hanging out in clusters with their friends. I saw Josh and Greg hanging out by the oak tree in our usual spot with the rest of our group. Josh waved and Callie separated from me to go over to him. Greg gave me a smile that I returned.

I know I promised Callie I’d get out there and be my normal fun loving, flirty self but I didn’t want to start right that second.

Instead I wandered off by myself. I went over to the main stairway where people tended not to hang out by and sat down. I gazed at the school and for the first time noticed that it was actually really beautiful. It looked like a boarding school, well, at least the ones I’ve seen on TV. It was pretty large for our small town but there used to be more people living here. There were bushes all around the building, ivy climbed up the sides, and in the front, where I was sitting, was a small garden with a few benches where students could study or as we call it, The Garden. No one usually sat there except for the underclassmen who thought it was cool but someone was sitting there today.
