The sound of the alarm clock woke Layla from her deep slumber. She wished that it wasn't true. That her mother would walk into her room complaining that the alarm had woken her as well since their rooms shared a wall. Yet even before she opened her eyes to see her half unpacked room she knew she was far away from home.
Her mother now shared a bed with her father halfway across the house and down the stairs. Leaving her with the room closest to the yard. Sitting up she pushed her long golden hair behind her ears, and dug dried tears from her brown eyes. Getting up she prepared for the day, and thought longingly of summer at home. She, and Gabe were going to go down to the creek ever day. Maybe bring a board game or get lemon drops and do nothing in particular.
Having finished her morning routine she went down stairs to find her mother eating waffles, and her dad with the latest paper.
"Morning sweetie." Said her mother offering her a waffle.
"No thanks mom I'm going over to Gabe's and telling him all about this place." She answered, more telling, then asking permission.
"Oh, come on now sweetie it's our first day surely..." her father began.
"Go ahead, but be back before lunch." Interrupted her mother.
"But..." He tried again.
"Thanks mom." Lyala said quickly, before they could change their minds. But before she left she heard the reason for her parents relax on where she went.
"The moves been hard on her, let her see Gabe if she wants to." She closed the door before she could hear her father's response. Opening the garage door she pulled her green bike from within, and went in her way. Pulling the gate that lead to her backyard, so it let her through, she walked over the grass, and over the small stone wall that lead to the graveyard beyond. A small road went through it, and after many wrong turns she realized the path.
Past David Brown, make a left on Terry Johnson, a right on Anna Shoemaker, a 90° on Jack Smith then straight ahead! There Gabe's backyard. It was a two bed, two bath painted blue. The backdoor lead directly into the living room. Lyala let myself in this door and called out to house containing only her best friend (both Gabes parents worked, even during the summer) "Gabe I'm here."
He comes down stairs, and to her surprise, he looks scared "What are you doing here?" He asks.
"Uh... we agreed to hang out today, remember." She said, in a confused voice.
"You didn't go through the cemetery did you?" He inquires.
"Yeah its the fastest way here." He looksed at her.
"Someone disappeared from there yesterday." He say,s explaining his fear.
"What?! Who?" Layla was getting scared now too. The idea of someone kidnapping, or murdering, someone her my new backyard was really scary.
"Terry Johnson."
