Zombpocalypse in the Making
Chapter 3~ Explanations
Chrysanthemum's POV
I closed the lid of the toilet, sitting on it. "It all started at the time of the Salem Witch trials." I began my tale.
"A great, great, great, great, great grandmother, only twenty at the time this happened, was cursed. Now, before I tell you exactly what happened, you must realize that we are not bad people."
He nodded, a sad smile on his face. I continued.
"Her name was also Chrysanthemum. She fell in love with a man, my five-times great grandfather, and they were soon to be engaged. Well, he had a sister. Her name was Saphira, and she didn't like her brother's new fiancée at all. She tried telling him that Chrysanthemum wasn't right for him, that he had many other options, and that she didn't deserve him.
"All that happened was he got mad at her. Now, at this point, Chrysanthemum is not yet 20, barely even over the age of 17. But still, she loved him. The time came when Chrysanthemum and her love were to wed, and it all passed in a flurry of happiness for the new couple. The sister still hated her guts. Years passed and her hate became worse. She was still hoping her brother would divorce her, but when Chrysanthemum became pregnant, she realized it was not going to happen. So, she went home.
"She pulled out a diary she kept, and made another entry that said, 'She is pregnant. The cheating whore that my brother let into his home, has been impregnated, and he wouldn't even listen about how he should leave her. But I have a plan of revenge. It is already in motion. I've cast a curse on my brother's family, one that is quite terrifying if I may say so. It was created solely by me. The curse begins with that lousy, good for nothing wife of his. Every child born into this world by any of her descendants will carry a trait, one that, if activated in an external body, will create an epidemic that will spread like wildfire. The trait is a genetic mutation.
"'If she, or any of her descendants, male or female, should bite someone, the person whom they have bitten will get sick and die. Upon dying, they would reanimate, and go after any who's blood was still pumping through their veins. I have made a way for the curse to be broken, of course. I myself wouldn't want to turn into a disgusting creature, so I have to create an escape plan. If a descendent ever figures out this plan, and enacts it, the curse will be over entirely. There will no longer be any chance of an epidemic. And my revenge will be at its end.'"
"Whoa. That's crazy." James' voice penetrated the silence that had enveloped us. I nodded, glad to have told someone. "Who all knows?"
"My parents, me, and now you. That's it." I stood. "And I would really appreciate it if it stayed that way. Forever."
"You've got my word. But I have a question..." He trailed off. I raised an eyebrow, waiting on him to continue.
"Are you guys able to kiss other people, or would they get sick from that?"
"Yes we can kiss!" I laughed, blushing a bit, "How else would descendants be made?"
His face screwed up in embarrassment, and my laughter died, leaving a small smile. "Oh duh, how stupid can I be?"
"Why did you ask?" I smiled more, confused. He shrugged, looking anywhere but at me.
"No reason. I was just curious." He lied. I nodded slowly, not believing a single word. Rolling my eyes, I opened the door to see Kara with her hand up, poised to knock. She dropped her fist, her eyes wide and innocent.
"Chrismanthmemum?" She asked, totally butchering my name, but in a cute way. I crouched, coming eye-level with her.
"Yes, sweetie?" I took her hand in mine gently. She looked at it and smiled sadly.
"I'm hungry. And the thumping is scary." She whimpered. "I don't know what to do."
"Oh sweetie, it's fine. Nothing can get in." I smiled sweetly at her. "And I have some really good cereal in the pantry. Do you want to come with me to get it?"
Her smile brightened and she nodded happily. "Can James come, Chrismanthmemum?"
I nodded, tapping her nose softly with my free hand's pointer finger. "He sure can. Just call my Chrissy."
"Okay, Chrissy. What kind of cereal?" She smiled brightly. I stood, scooping her up into my arms.
"Lots of good kinds." I pulled James by the hand, heading toward the kitchen pantry in the back storage room of the gun shop. I set her down, opening it with my fingers still gripping James' gently.
Kara jumped around in happiness at all the kinds of cereal. Fruity Pebbles, Choco-Dyno Bites, Captain Crunch -berry and otherwise- Cinnamon Toasters, and many more lined the walls. She skipped around, looking at them, until she caught sight of my box of Marshmallow Mateys and froze, her eyes widening in happiness. "I want THIS kind!"
I pulled it off the shelf with a smile, releasing James' hand and walking out of the large pantry room. I pulled the milk out of the refrigerator and made little Kara a bowl. She happily ate it all as I sat and watched her. I checked my watch, realizing how late it'd become.
"Kara?" I asked gently. Her head swiveled toward me, cheeks bulging from the food. "What is your bed time?"
She swallowed a couple of times until her mouth was empty, and took a breath. "8 at night. Why?"
"Because, hon. It's 8:15." I smiled sadly at her. Her eyes widened, and she looked down at her - now-empty - bowl. She looked up, pleading with me to let her stay up just a little longer.
"Please can I stay up until 8:30?" She begged. "Please? I want to talk to Bryan and Kenny more."
I sighed, smiling as I gave in. "Only 8:30. Not one minute more."
"Yay!" She lunged toward me, wrapping me in a tight hug. "Thank you, Chrissy!"
"No problem, Squirt. Now go on." I ruffled her hair. "Go play with Bryan and Kenny."
"Okay!" She jumped up, running out of the room. I picked up her bowl and rinsed it out, loading it into the dishwasher. I turned around, only to come inches away from James. My eyes widened when I realized just how close he was. I could literally feel his hot breath fanning across my lips.
"Whoa. Can-can I have a l-little space?" I stuttered out. He backed away an inch or so, studying my face. "What?"
"You are a weird one." He smirked. I scoffed, glaring. "Not in a bad way. Just... You're different."
"Thanks?" I questioned more than thanked him. "How am I different exactly?"
"You just... Aren't what you seem." He smiled.
"And that's good?" I raised an eyebrow.
"That's better than good." He raised a hand to move a piece of hair behind my ear. My breath shuddered out, and I cleared my throat, pushing softly past him with a sponge. I cleaned the spot Kara was sitting at, making sure to take my time to allow my blush to disappear.
"Um, thank you." I straightened once my face no longer felt hot. I turned to him and released my facial features, allowing a small smile through. He bit his lip, winking at me.
