Nic was cold and wet and scared. She was also lost.

Father had been hurting momma again. She couldn't get by to her room without being seen and momma had said never to be seen when Father was hurting her. So she ran outside and down the street. In fact, by the time she had stopped running she was totally lost. She didn't know where she was. It was just her and Owen, her very ratty, very loved bear. He wore a gray corduroy vest and had black fur. He had been a birthday gift from her brother when she had turned three. He was her very favorite thing ever.

She kept walking, hoping to see someone or something she recognized and she hugged Owen closer. She was a big six-year-old, not a baby. It was silly to be afraid of the growing darkness. And she had Owen who would keep the scary things away.

Like Father.

It had started storming some time ago. It was the worst storm Nic had ever seen. The lighting and thunder terrified her. Her brother had always told her not to play outside in the thunder and lightning because the lightning might get her. She was hiding in a clump of scraggly bushes shivering in her soaked jeans and t-shirt hiding from some bigger boys who had chased her.

A dog began barking and growling right by the bushes. She bolted away from the bushes. They were chasing her again! In her flight, she tripped over a root and tumbled down the hill. She hit her head hard as she landed at the bottom. She stood up shakily, her head throbbing and her ankle hurt. She clutched Owen close and stumbled along the bottom of the hill towards the street. She stepped through the trees onto the sidewalk and the darkness swallowed her up.

A few days later a little girl woke up in the hospital. She could remember her name was Nic but not if it was short for something. She could remember her age and that she was born in September, but not much else. She couldn't remember where she lived or her parents' names. In fact, the only other name she could remember was her bear's.

She remembered Owen.

AN: I know I know. I need to finish a story before I start a new one.  I will not be updating this one regularly. Mainly because I don't want to make promises I can't keep.  I think I made it pretty obvious who Nic is, but any guesses?
