1. Bizarre Encounter

The day had been incredibly awful and beyond tiring. I trudged up the stairs to my apartment, searching my pocket for the keys. I could barely piece together what lay before my eyes as my mind was fuzzy and on the verge of going black. It didn't take me long to snap back to reality though.

The apartment just before mine was ajar, all kinds of rubbish spilling through the door and messing up the corridor entirely. I couldn't bear to think of what happened and simply wanted to hit my pillows but curiosity got the better of me.

"Mr. Matsukawa?" I called, hoping for a positive answer but getting none in response.

I stepped over the papers and cans littering the floor as I peered into the open apartment. It was rather dim, the only source of light being a row of candles which were oddly extremely symmetrically placed.

"What the-"

The sight was bizarre; something I would only see in horror movies. There were symbols and papers everywhere. Ink pooled in random spots and garbage shoved into a corner of the kitchen.

I knew he was nuts but I didn't think it was this bad. What had he gotten himself into? I didn't have much time to ponder as a sudden flash of light illuminated the room. The wall painted in ink shone like something out of a movie and left me in utter awe. I could barely comprehend this anymore.

Was I tired enough to hallucinate?

I held a hand over my eyes to lessen the pain of white light piercing them but it was over as soon as it began. However, the result of it didn't help my confusion.

There stood a man, slightly tanned with dark, wild hair, questionable attire, and eyes so gold he couldn't have been human.  Considering his arrival, I doubt he was one to begin with.

I couldn't form words anymore. All that spilled through my expression was confusion and shock. What in the world was going on here?

"Hi there, human," the male greeted with a smile, probably attempting to be polite but the sly behind it was easy to notice.

"I'm leaving," was all I got out as I stumbled out the door and to my apartment. Hoping to forget what I saw, not even question it or think about it.

Perhaps it really was a hallucination from exhaustion. It was a possibility. Albeit my imagination was vivid but this was far too realistic. However, I let my mind slip into darkness as sleep took over my being for that night.

The morning wasn't kind to me. Sunlight made me cringe and throw the blanket over my head until my mind screamed about work. Once fully awake, I realised it was my day off and groaned as I fell back into bed.

"Oya oya?"

I shot up so fast, I nearly jumped straight out of bed. There stood a man, leaning against my bedroom door in unfamiliar clothing and a bored look.

"You sure did sleep like a log there. I thought you were dead," he laughed at his own joke and took a seat at the edge of the bed.

"Let me do the honours," he began. "My name's Kuroo Tetsurou. High class demon, leader of my clan, unfortunately ended up here because of a summoning. What's your side of the story?"

"I..."

"Why are you always in shock?"

"Well, do you expect me to greet a demon with pleasantries and cookies?" I asked exasperatedly to which Kuroo laughed heartily.

"That was a good one!"

"I don't know what's going on. Matsukawa is a weird occultist or something and a demon is now in my room?" I rambled, more so to myself.

"Wait so you didn't summon me?"

"Does it look like I did?"

"Well there wasn't anyone else at the site, was there now, Ms. 'Oh it's so obvious'?" His voice took a higher pitch in the end for the mockery.

"Well go back then. Just run off to your demon world," I shrugged.

"Would have, if I could, dearie," he retorted.

"So you're some high class demon and you can't even go back to where you came from?" I mocked in response. It was a constant banter, neither of us backing down and being mature enough to deal with the situation at hand.

"Guess some people just don't know things beyond their realm. Ignorant!" He scoffed, crossing his arms across his chest.

"I have to say, you sure are fiesty for trying to argue with a demon," he admitted, throwing a glance my way which gleamed with curiosity.

"I was just too tired to bother being respectful with an intruder."

"I was summoned! I didn't intrude on anybody!"

"Well I didn't summon you so get out of my apartment!"

"But you're the only who's here! No one else knows anything so just," he sighed, softening his voice. "Help me go back?"

I groaned in response, shoving my face into a pillow. Looking up at the male, I noticed how attractive he was. He had sharp feline eyes, a strong yet lean build and the wildest hair that somehow looked great despite being a complete mess.

"I'll decide depending on what I should do," I stated, still clutching the pillow as I sat up in bed.

"Great. Alright. That's fine. Nothing one can't do. The point of summoning a demon is for us to grant the human a wish for something else in return, be it food or fortune," he explained.

"That sounds suspicious."

"Don't worry, since you didn't summon me, I can't exactly take anything from you. But you can help me get to the person who did, right?"

"I'm not too sure I can..."

"Wait- actually, there is another way but it's far too complicated," his brow furrowed in deep thought.

"And that is?"

"It's a whole ritual but it's too complex to remember so I'd need to check books but I don't know where they may be in the human realm. "

"Wait, wouldn't Matsukawa have something like that?" I suggested.

"Who?"

"The guy who's apartment you arrived in," I explained. A knowing look formed on our faces as we grinned in triumph at our first lead.

"We should be able to find something there," I reassured.

"Thank you, oh kind human," Kuroo bowed gracefully, his robe settling behind him daintily to match the posture. I couldn't help but chuckle at that.

"Call me Y/n," I smiled.

"I much rather call you Master," he smirked, eyes sparkling with mischief.

"You really make me want to smack you," I said, faking a stern tone before both of us burst out laughing.

Never in my life would I have ever thought I'd befriend a demon and help him out at that. It was going to be an interesting experience to say the least.

A/n : So I absolutely love Kuroo because he is a ridiculous dork but also such a sly lil shit and I thought a demon AU would be fun to write about! And I know there isn't a proper title yet but if something strikes I shall rename it then :P

(Did this with my vampire Karma fanfic and it still doesn't have a proper title so the expectations are low lolol)

For those who don't know, Matsukawa is from Aoba Johsai and *spoiler* he works at a funeral company as an adult so I thought he was the closest character in Haikyuu to go with the occult obsessed neighbour.
