THE WIND HOWLED IN MY EARS as I ran on the rooftops. My heart was pounding so loud I could hear it in my ears. Adrenaline was coursing through my veins, causing me to run faster. I didn't actually know where I was running, I was just trying to get somewhere safe. I took a quick glance behind me, only to have a bullet fly by my head. Another flew by a second later, making me flinch. I understand that they think I killed one of their guys, but jesus, did they have to shoot at me? It wasn't even me!

I took a sharp left and jumped down onto a fire escape. Unfortunately, it was destroyed and the ground wasn't close at all. If I jumped, I would certainly break a leg. I looked at the window next to me. With a sigh, I punched it, the glass shattering. Searing pain shot through my knuckles, but I ignored it. I jumped through the open space and ran through the halls of the building. I halted to a stop when I saw a few guys at the end of it near the stairs. They were behind me, too. I was trapped. They pointed their guns at me and I flicked my eyes between them.

"Nikkolette Williams, surrender your bag," the lead announced. "You are being charged with the murder of a soldier and, if you do not cooperate, you will be killed."

Now, you may be a bit confused. Let's rewind to a little bit ago.

10 minutes earlier

I followed him as he walked along the the alleyways, avoiding the soldiers. His pistol bounced on his hip with each step, making me a bit nervous. He always had his gun tucked under his waistband so that it was out of sight. This time it was in the holster, so he was going to shoot something (or someone) later. A thought in the back of my mind warned me that he was probably leading me to my death, while the other part said that he was going to try to leave Boston, in which case I'd have to let him go alone. Both weren't very good options.

"Ethan," I called, "where are you taking me?"

"Up," he replied, pointing above his head.

"What the hell does that mean?"

"Rooftops. Now be quiet or we'll get caught."

"This is probably illegal, right?"

"Sweetheart, dating me is illegal, but you decided to do that anyway." He flashed me a smirk over his shoulder, to which I rolled my eyes.

He stopped sneaking and jumped up, grabbing a ladder. He pulled himself onto the fire escape, then helped me up. I followed him as he sprinted up the stairs, checking the windows to ensure no one could see us. He crouched when he reached the rooftop, then dropped into a crawl. I did the same, going to the opposite edge of the roof. A checkpoint was below us, crawling with armored soldiers holding rifles.

"You see that guy?" Ethan whispered, pointing to one of the shortest soldiers. "He is a complete dickhead."

"What'd he do?" I questioned.

"He took my rifle. It's the one he's holding. All I have left is this fucking pistol that has got terrible range." I hummed. "Do you trust me?"

I hesitated. "Yeah."

He grabbed his pistol and aimed down at the soliders. I furrowed my eyebrows, considering that he'd miss from this range...Except he didn't. The gunshot echoed around us and the bullet flew through the air, hitting the short solider in the face. The soliders snapped their attention in our direction. Ethan quickly ducked his head without telling me. The soliders talked to each other before aiming their rifles at me. I ducked my head, glancing at Ethan.

"Sorry, I can't get killed today, I'd lose too much," he said before getting up into a crouch and running. I stared after him, confusion on my face. So now the soldiers think I killed that guy. What a dick move.

Now

There. All caught up.

I glanced between each of the soliders, noting how they kept inching closer, as if I was going to straight up attack them like they weren't carrying rifles. I hesitantly felt around the outside of my bag, wrapping my hand around a smoke grenade that was hanging off the side. One of the soldiers noticed, but didn't say anything. With a quick flick of my hand, I threw the grenade onto the floor, causing it to explode in a dark cloud. The group started to yell at each other as I ran, slipping out the window I came in. I glanced at the ground before hesitantly jumping over the side of the fire escape. When I hit the bottom, I didn't hear any cracks, so I assumed nothing was broken. I sprinted down the street, running to the one building I knew I'd be safe.

I pushed the door open with my shoulder, shutting it once I walked in. The various other Fireflies nodded at me as I passed, none of them asking about the broken glass and blood on my hand. I went up a few flights of stairs, heading down the hall of the 3rd floor. I paused at one of the apartment doors, knocking on it until it opened. My best friend, Veronica, glanced at my hand before tapping aside and letting me in. I went to her tiny kitchen, jumping up and sitting on the counter.

"What the hell happened to you?" She asked as she grabbed a cloth and some alcohol.

"Punched a window to escape some soldiers," I replied. She poured some of it onto the cloth.

"Soldiers? What'd you do?"

"Nothing. Ethan killed one and booked it, so they thouht I did it." I hissed as she pressed the cloth to knuckles, avoiding the glass.

"I told you he was bad news." She dabbed a few places, then set it next to me.

"Yeah, yeah." I rolled my eyes. We fell jnto silence for a few minutes.

"Ellie was looking for you earlier. She said that Marlene hadn't come back yet and she needed to talk to you."

"Okay. I'll head to her later." She pulled out one of the small shards of glass, making me wince.

"Just be safer, alright?"

I nodded, but I didn't mean it. When you're a Firefly that has soldiers following you around to try to kill you, there's not much you can do to be safe. I just hoped that I'd make it out alive.

Hey guys. The ending kind of sucked, sorry. I didn't know exactly how to end this one, but I promise that it will get better. Hopefully ypu enjoyed it so far.
