Prologue

June 10, 1864

Dear Diary,

Today a carriage arrived on my father’s property, bringing two lovely young twins with it. One of the twins was outgoing and confident, and the other was kind but shy.

They both had dark brown hair and a mischeivious glint in their black eyes. They were beautiful; the most beautiful. They were also identical. The only defining factor was that one’s hair was curly and the other’s straight.

Katherine was everyone’s favorite, anyone could see that, and I was no different. She is beautiful, she is courageous, she is funny….

All I want is for her to be mine.

June 27, 1864

Dear Diary,

I haven’t had time to write much since the Pierce twins arrived on my family’s property. Katherine is very popular among the townspeople; and my father. I must say, I do get envious of all the time they spend together out on the croquet field.

They have been staying at our house for a few weeks now, they are orphans; their parents having been killed in a fire. Katherine says it was a long time ago, that only her sister was upset about it anymore.

Elena, her sister, isn’t around much. I think she’s in town a lot. Pearl, the lady who runs the Apothecary and Katherine’s best friend, tells me she’s in there almost everyday. She’s never at the house, but no one bothers to worry.

They like Elena, but they like Katherine more.

June 28, 1864

Dear Diary,

Katherine is letting me escort her to the Founder’s ball. Elena says she doesn’t want to go.

July 1, 1864

Dear Diary,

Katherine and Elena are vampires.

July 21, 1864

Dear Diary,

I think my father is growing wise to Katherine and Elena. He disappears all night only to hide out in his office all day. I told Katherine I thought they were in danger. She didn’t listen.

July 25, 1864

Dear Diary,

Katherine is dead. They burned her in the church. I don’t know where Elena is, I think she is dead too.

I’ve held off writing this for 2 days, the pain is too great right now. All I feel is grief. I loved her.

September 2, 1864

Dear Diary,

I killed myself today, but I came back to life. I am hungry. I am a vampire.

December 25, 1864

Dear Diary,

It is Christmas and in 3 short months I’ve killed over 30 people. I hate myself.

February 14, 1865

Dear Diary,

It’s Valentine’s Day. I miss Katherine.

May 18, 1865

Dear Diary,

I killed 4 people this week.

August 5, 1865

Dear Diary, Today is Katherine’s birthday. I learned how to shut out my feelings, that’s what I have been doing.

November 30, 1865

Dear Diary,

I met another vampire today, Alexia. She called me ‘Ripper.’ She says she can help me love again.

December 1, 1865

Dear Diary,

Alexia has put me on an animal blood diet. It’s disgusting. I want human blood again, and my feelings are coming back.

It’s my fault.

January 5, 1866

Dear Diary,

I haven’t had human blood in 4 weeks. I’m proud of myself, but this guilt is killing me.

April 17, 1866

Dear Diary,

Elena is alive. I had forgotten all about her. She is grief stricken like I was, like I am. She told me she never liked shutting her feelings out, like Katherine, like I used to.

We decided to stick together. We’re both guilty and heartbroken over Katherine’s death. We need each other.
