"So, they are all three missing?" Tallin crossed her arms.
She was practically radiation annoyance. Not that Sword did not share her feelings on the matter, but losing three recruits on a critical mission was far from ideal. All three mentors had been gathered in the council's meeting room to talk about how their students' current task was going. To put it bluntly, their students had messed up. Well, if the rumors were to be accurate, then Sword's pet project had been the one closest to getting the mission done. The idea that Irvin had tried to blow up the heir was amusing to him. Such a direct and simple solution, but what a statement as well. Sword honestly did not know the kid had it in him.
Cornix cleared his throat: "They are not missing, miss Tallin, they have been captured."
"So we lost three more recruits already?" she sighed.
"Unless we do something they are all three going to be executed, miss Tallin" Cornix replied.
"Well, are they worth the resource to try and save them?" she asked.
See, that was always the big question, was it not? They all three knew how limited the rebellion's recourse was, and breaking people out of jail was not an easy task. Yes, Tallin could teleport them out, but she was also a valuable asset they could not bear to lose on a mission, least of all one trying to save some untrained newcomers. It was not ideal, but it was the harsh truth. Sometimes they had to let people die even if they could step in. Because sometimes stepping in was just too risky.
Sword's final verdict was based on logic: "They are not, they are untrained and Irvin has a terrible attitude to boot. I think we are better served using our recourses elsewhere."
Tallin and Cornix nodded, showing their agreement with his death sentence.
Because Sword was under no illusion, that was what this was. They were going to leave those kids to their fate.
"Such a shame, I have come to like Vasin even with all his omens of doom," Cornix lamented.
"Same, Maeve was a decent enough company," Tallin shared.
"Well, Irvin was a brat, not sad losing that kid," Sword bluffed.
The light tone of the conversation felt wrong. It tugged at Sword's nerves. He left the other two mentors behind, electing to go train instead. He needed to get this entire mess out of his head. He might do something foolish otherwise. Had his old ally managed to catch win of Irvin's whereabouts? Would he be too late?
