8 year old innocence 8 year innocence 8 year old innocence—

It was dinner time for the Kita's. Shinsuke watched his daughter, [Y/N], run to the dinning room, pretending to be a bird flying. You climbed into your seat, which you were way too short for. A booster seat (basically the car seats you had as a child lol) was placed there so you could reach the table. Shinsuke hated being a single parent, but it was worth keeping his little daughter around to lift his spirits. Shinsuke had set the food on the table while you banged your little fists on the table, awaiting your grand meal. He laughed, watching your little antics.

Most dinners, you guys had rice with eggs and soy sauce (so fucking good) for dinner but after his harvests, Shinsuke made sure to buy some special things for dinner that night. That, so happened to be today. And you were ecstatic. He often bought something you hadn't eaten before since you love trying new foods. You swung your legs under the table, asking your father to hurry up so you could eat already. You couldn't wait. Today was curry rice, tofu and cucumber as a side dish and some seasoned okra. Shinsuke reassured that he'd be there, making sure his little surprise was safely tucked in the fridge. He had sat down, the two of you saying in unison, "Itadakimasu!" A greeting which Japanese people used before eating. Like how the French say Bon Appétit. Shinsuke thought it was a good idea to teach his wild and high-spirited daughter a few manners, just a few. For now.

"[Y/N], do you remember what today is?"

"Harvest day," you replied, not looking up from your plate of curry rice. You seemed to really enjoy it.

"No, it's something else." Shinsuke pressed, it was sad how forgetful you were. You got distracted so easily. One time, you saw a butterfly and chased it off while you were helping him harvest when Shinsuke wasn't looking. He thought he lost you for real but you were just talking with the other rice farmer, an old married couple who invited you for some tea and cookies. You were standing on the porch, the old couple in rocking chairs when Shinsuke found you on your 'little adventure.' He apologized and took you home immediately.

You gasped, your eyes lighting up like stars, "I know! I know! It's my birthday!" You waved your hands in the air with a huge grin on your face. Shinsuke chuckled as he bit into an okra. "Do we have cake? Do we?"

"I don't know, do we?" He replied, teasing his daughter.

You thought for a minute, putting your 'thinking cap' on for a very long time. It was just five minutes, you dork. "Hmmm...Yes! We do! What kind?"

"I can't tell you," Shinsuke answered, smiling slightly. You huffed, puffing your cheeks out and crossing your arms. "We can find out if you finish all your vegetables." You hadn't touched your cucumbers or okra. You didn't like green foods.

"Okay!" You replied, shoving about four cucumber slices into your mouth at once. You chewed, your pleasant face turning disgusted. Shinsuke thought this was funny. It was not. You kept chewing since you wanted to find out what cake you two were having for tonight so you swallowed the cucumbers. You didn't like them. Not one bit. You continued to eat the cucumbers out of disgust. Again, Shinsuke laughed. You didn't understand, this wasn't funny at all. Or maybe his sense of humor was bad. You couldn't care less, you just didn't like your dad laughing at you.

The okra tasted much better on your picky tastebuds. It was seasoned rather than raw so you could chew it without wanting to spitting it out. But just by a bit. The texture was weird and you didn't like it. You made a weird face that Shinsuke thought was funny. It was. But you just couldn't see the look on your face so you didn't know. You had gone through all of the vegetables. "I'm done! I'm done!" You cheered, kicking your legs and arms up.

Shinsuke got up to get the two slices of cake he has bought. "Close your eyes," he said. You shut them tight, using your hands to hide them even further. "No peeking," he added.

"I'm not!"

You heard a few clanks of plates and forks colliding and the thud of the plate being put down on the table, as well as the light switch going off. "Okay, you can can open your eyes."

In front of you, was a very nice slice of strawberry shortcake with candles. Seven small candles. And a very large eight. You were turning eight. Soon, you'd be nine, then you'd be ten. Then, Daddy couldn't treat you like a baby anymore, you thought. Shinsuke sang the happy birthday song to his daughter. You liked his singing voice. It made you feel safe. You liked that feeling. You smiled, giddily waiting to blow out the candles. You knew you had to make a wish but Shinsuke reminded you. He finished the song. You sucked in as much air as possible, wanting to blow out all the candles at once.

I wish Daddy could find a new Mommy so he'd be happier.
