My Grandfather started The Game. Every male following played as well, including his two sons, my father and my uncle. Now that's another unique thing about my family, for generations having girls born into the family was rare and since my great-great-aunt I am the only girl born into the Hawthorne line.
Seeing as I'm not a boy I couldn't exactly play the Game the same way brothers and father and uncle did. Even if I could they would never let me.
No, from the day my ultrasound showed me to be a girl every boy born before me was careful instructed in how to be the perfect overprotective bodyguards and brothers.
Now due to the fact my mother died giving birth to Eaton and I, I grew up entirely surrounded by male testosterone. Three brothers, three older male cousins, my father, and my uncle (who also lost his wife) all in the same home. All moving around together.
So it's not strange to see why I turned out a total tomboy and why I refused to except that there was something they could do that I couldn't.
Instead of me joining the game we added a new position. The Keeper.
In the game you had to either get a girl to sleep with or fall in love with you. The guys obviously weren't going to allow me to sleep around, so they gave me the playbook and told me to use it, to learn from it and to protect my heart while they protect everything else.
Now we update the playbook as we move around, we learn from the people we meet and the crazy-ass situations we get into.
I love the players, and they love the game.

Blank Space is the theme song for this book and my inspiration.
Emmy is the only character I'm going to cast.
