Short message from the author:
This work is entirely mine. Any similarities with other works (although I doubt it) are completely fortuitous.
I'm just reworking it right now, so its appearance here may be temporary, for various reasons.
Re-re-republication. I'm not even sure to publish everything here...but good. And I'm not immune to typos, obviously!

In a distant (very distant) kingdom, which no one suspects exists despite the crisis taking place...
Thomas was well known in his village. And it wasn't because he was the only one who had that name in his village, no.
It was because of his immense greed for money.
He, who was born into a ruined family of high rank, had always had his eye on his family tree, looking for a hidden inheritance that he would have the chance to take in secret. Of course he didn't find anything.
By marrying an ancient noblewoman who was still bathed in money, he glimpsed the luxury life that he already considered his years ago. Taking advantage of the presence of his wife who handled social relations as well as the housekeeping, he spent the money, which was now his, in futile things, but which he considered necessary (a jacket in red? He needed it in white. Then with lace. Then with gold buttons...in short, whatever that seemed to cost money.).
The poor young woman, despite all herlove for him, could only sigh with joy when he accepted a job as a servant at the Savelian House. He only returned on the weekends, which gave her time to enjoy the week's money as she should, while he himself took advantage of his immense salary, which provided for his needs of rich. However, in the contract he had signed, he had not read the fine print at the bottom of the page indicating that "the staff of the House of Lord Savelian must be ready for any change of status and work".
And he soon regretted it, because theLord in question decided one fine morning to send a small troop of men into the Forest of Ages with the objective of capturing the Crown Prince of their world. No less.
He was of course a member of the saidtroop, and found himself on a horse, galloping in the rain, trying to catch up with a small figure more than two kilometers ahead of them.
«Why does the Lord want us to bring him back? He yelled at the guy next to him .
"Because it is an order!"
"But it is not a crime to take such action against the Royal Family?"
-That's not our problem! Speed itup!"
Seeing his colleague's black gaze, he did so, while telling himself that, despite all his questions, he might already know the answer.
The Prince was going to look for them in another world. And the Lord, who was aiming for the throne, may well want to stop him before he passes the portal...
"Hey!"
Hearing the sigh of despair, he thought he would not receive an answer, but the man turned around:
"What now?
"How long has the Lord known that the Prince intended to go to another world?"
-Who knows. Maybe a week or more.
-So why didn't he ask us to ambush the gate instead of pursuing our target on D-Day?"
His counterpart looked thoughtful, but somebody screamed, making them stop.
In front of them stood a huge iron door decorated with flowers, open to a sky-blue vortex-like tourbillon. The surface, which unveiled buildings in reverse, suddenly became blurred before becoming as smooth as glass.
And when they saw the desperate air of their captain, they realized that the Prince had already crossed it.
"We have failed," he said."Let's go home!"
We had no chance of catching him, did we?
But the Lord might not take thisevidence as an excuse...
Thomas mumbled a few magic prayers andcrossed his fingers so that he would not be too punished. In fact, ifhe got out without losing a limb, he'd get out the champagne.
Much to his surprise, the Lord did not punish them, although he looked vaguely disgusted when he saw them come back completely soaked.
He simply whispered a «I knew it»,smiled with a mysterious air and went back to his room in a magnificent flight of capes worthy of his rank. Thomas therefore had the answer to his question.
The Lord wasn't even trying to stop the Prince from leaving.
He just wanted to launch a hunt because it amused him.
And he didn't even have the right to get upset if he didn't want to lose his head (or his salary, who knew what the priority was).
Although this is a 90% correct conclusion, the "ex-servant/soldier became a servant again" felt that the sequence of events might become more complicated.
"The stories of the Royal Family are really something else," he sighed as he walked out of his bedroom.
He took the firm decision to do everything to avoid being involved, from near or far.
He didn't know that it wasn't just these stories that were incredible...
