When I woke up, Morpheus was perched on the arm of the couch. His cheeks were rosy. The hunger was gone. The sadness remained. I blinked groggily and tried to push myself up.
"Shh, lay down." Morpheus stood and then knelt at my side.
"What," I swallowed. "what did you do to me?"
"I fed from the source of your soul." He brushed a stray curl from my face, "I'm a parasite. A vampire." He grimaced at the word. "Not a blood vampire like you're used to, no, something much older. Something much worse."
A tear slipped down my face.
He wiped it away gently, "Don't cry. I never wanted to hurt you..."
I pushed his arm away, "Then why?"
"I had to feed--"
"No. Why me?"
Morpheus blinked and began to quietly sing. "Tree-girl, you trusted a stranger when maybe you shouldn't, you fell for my trap though I'd hoped that you wouldn't. A vampire's shadow is what you've become, a vampire's shadow because he lacks one."
Morpheus nimbly rose and slunk away towards the bedroom. When he reached the doorway my voice called out before I could stop it.
"Morpheus?"
"Go to sleep my pet." He turned off the light. "I'll be here in the morning."
And he was. And he always was.
