The sound of cars speeding through the streets, honking at pedestrians was an everyday thing for everyone living in the Big Apple. Water splashing against the sidewalks soaking the rest of my shoes isn't pleasant. Nor is the smell of weed and gasoline pleasant but it's home.
Music blasting through my headphones walking down a street in Midtown, New York. I could either take the short way home or the long way home. Me not knowing that this decision will change my life forever, I chose to take a long way. And boy would that decision come and bit me in the ass.
I start walking deeper and deeper into the dark ominous alley and suddenly I hear grunts and a cry of pain. Taking my headphones off I felt my heart drop to my chest. Fear immediately started coursing through my veins and I did the most courageous thing I have ever done in my entire life. I ran towards the cry and stood before a woman who wore clubbing clothes. Immediately I began assessing the situation and thought through every single possible outcome for this situation. Then there in my heart, I knew I wasn't getting out of this situation alive. I made another decision that would also forever change my life. I dialed 9-11 and tossed my phone to the girl as discreetly as I could while staring down at the burly and the sickly looking men ganging up on the girl. Not even checking if she had caught it or not.
I said as loudly and as confident as I could, "Leave her alone. Find someone else cause she isn't interested."
The two men glanced at each other and grinned viciously making me falter for a second before I quickly regained my composure. The burly looking one then said "What are you gonna do about it girly? It's only you after all not much of a fight if ya ask me." He said giving me a grin that screamed malice.
Sucking in a deep breath and mustering as much courage as I could I said "I may be a girl but I'm smart enough to know that in less than five minutes the cops are going to show up because while you two idiots were eye raping this poor girl I called the cops."
I take a confident step further and without breaking eye contact I say, "I also sent my location to everyone in my contacts and they know I'm in trouble meaning they already sent it to the police" I hold up my hand and pull down on the sleeves of my sweater and show them my old outdated Apple Watch I got for my 18th birthday.
I take another step further tilting my head testing fate and say "I may be a little girl but this little girl just outsmarted two dumb asses who thought they could get away with abusing this girl. I thought you said this wasn't much of a fight. Well now that I think about it, it's probably not much of a fight for you two idiots." I give them a closed-eyed smile and turn a little to glance at the girl who was sitting up and she placed her head in between her knees.
From the corner of my eye, I can see the two men are seething with anger and are balling up their fists as a sign of anger. They snap open their eyes and begin to stalk towards me, which doesn't take long considering that I was up in their face oozing confidence, in less than a second they're already swinging their fists at me but considering I worked at a martial arts dojo I easily evaded their advances. Stepping from the right to left I kept on taking a step back and turned my body so I wouldn't be backing into the girl.
Swing after swing the men started to become sluggish so I let one of them hit my stomach so I could make my move. I shifted my feet into an offensive stance took my hands out of my pocket and got into my position. Widening my feet, I maneuvered my hands so they went under their fists and struck their guts as hard as I could so I could incapacitate them. They stumbled and faltered back struggling to regain their composure. The next thing I hear is sirens echoing off the old brick walls and red-blue lights flashing their light reflecting off the broken pieces of glass scattered across the floor.
The girl who regained her composure took a deep breath and attempted to stand but couldn't so I got closer to her and said "It's going to be alright. I'm going to hook my arm around your waist to help you up is that okay?"
I'm tiptoeing around the situation ignoring everything that just happened so she doesn't have a panic attack. Breathing heavily she nods her head and lifts her arm. I hook my arm around her waist and lift her carefully in case she has an injury.
We walked towards the flashing lights of red and blue carefully so we can leave unnoticed. An officer approached us and guided us to an ambulance and said " You both are going to be okay. I'm going to need your names and a rundown of the situation here."
His words felt cold inhuman almost robotic making my blood boil. My bangs shadowed my eyes for a second until I looked up and my bright forest green eyes had darkened.
I said with a cold venomous tone "She needs medical attention something you aren't giving her so let me take her to the paramedics so she can get checked out. Afterward, I will answer any questions you have but not now."
The officer nodded and escorted her to the ambulance. I followed closely behind making sure he wouldn't ask her questions that would put her mental health at risk. I hear the two men arguing with the officers detaining them saying stupid things about women making me wonder if they ever went to school.
Pushing that thought aside I turned and looked up to the police officer and said " I need to make a quick phone call so please don't ask her any questions she's not ready for."
I turned around not waiting for a response and began punching in the numbers I needed to make the call.
I made the call unaware of the commotion happening behind me. The moment I turned around my fate was sealed.
I heard the dial tone and waited for them to respond. While waiting for a response I noticed the loud scream and turned around only to be greeted by darkness.
I went through the alley thinking everything was gonna be alright but life had other plans for me.
