Emperor Maximilian I of the Occultorian Empire (the legitimate government of the Supernatural World) is granted an annulment from Princess Sanchia in exchange for a vote in the Matriarchal Conclave. Formerly Deprivada Pecaminosa, the cardinal is elected Matriarch Catherine III.
In the meantime, the magician/assassin Irina Korsakova attempts to murder Emperor Max, take his form and then announce he is resigning from the Emperorship, paving the way for Empress Lilith to re-ascend the Occult Throne without any questions. However, her assassination attempts fail and she is dismissed from the Imperial Court.
Max goes back up to Celio to reconquer it for the Empire and so that he could break Jessica's engagement to Count Ludwig. He succeeds when he offers gold to the bankrupt King of Celio.
Soon, Princess Sanchia and her mother are sent packing back to Magicka and Max issues an Imperial Edict moving the Matriarch to the top of the Order of Precedence, above even himself. He and Jessica make wedding plans and celebrate, but unfortunately, their celebration is cut short when the King of Celio sends a message saying that he's changed his mind about rejoining the Empire, which means that Jessica is no longer free to marry Max.
As Book 5 ends, Viscountess Jessica is mysteriously summoned back to Celio by a whistle from an unknown source....
