*ring*
*ring*
*ring*I cursed in my sleep as I heard my phone ring. I shuffled in my sheets to turn on the lamp. 2:30 am, the clock read.
*ring*
"hello?" I answered in and annoyed tone, my eyes still closed.
"Anna?" a worried Jared spoke on the line.
"WHAT THE FUCK JARED?! IT'S 2:30 IN THE MORNING!" I yelled through the phone. I could literally hear him jump at my sudden outburst.
"Anna please. Stop yelling this is an emergency" he rushed with same urgency.
"What is it?" I sat up and rubbed my eyes as I finally realized it was a call from the hospital at 2:30 in the morning. It can't be anything unimportant for sure.
"Anna I need you at the hospital in 10. There's been a blast in hotel vacation inn. It's an emergency"
I listened to Jared with my eyes aghast. All the traces of sleep flew from my eyes. "Shit! I'll be there" I quickly answered and hung up.
I rolled out of my bed and rushed out of my room, then gave 3 loud knocks at Leah's door.
"Emergency! Gotta reach hospital in 10. Out of your bed! Now!" I yelled and without waiting for a response rushed to my room.
I changed into a pair of jeans and pulled a Jacket over my night tshirt. I then grabbed my keys and wallet and walked out of my house.
A dry, cold wind swept through my face, making me shiver and run towards my car. As I turned on the engine Leah locked the front door of our condo and literally ran towards my car.
"Shit! It's freezing! Let's go" she spoke as she took her seat and rubbed her hands to generate some warmth.
"Good that you're up and here. I would have locked your in the house for I don't know how long otherwise" I told her as I kept my eyes on the road.
"Yeah? What's the emergency? Is it that bad?" she turned on the blower and placed her hands in front of it as she spoke.
I nodded. "Blast at vacation inn" I briefed.
"Oh boy!" she answered.
We reach the hospital in no time. I along with Leah ran indoors only to see a huge hustle in the place. A place that is filled with piercing silence on ordinary basis was now crying out with pain, deperation, fear, worry, regret and what not.
Phones were ringing tirelessly and people were wailing for help as I walked past the corridor and to the emergency room.
"Susannah! Thank heavens you're here! Get into your coat and in the room now!" Dr. Jeremy exclaimed as he noticed me walking towards the group of doctors he was assigning duties to.
"Sir" I nodded then rushed to my cabin. I slipped into the scrubs with lightening speed and took the first case I faced. It was a small child of about 5 laying on the stretcher. His face was burnt with small pieces of skin hanging out. The blood and flesh had turned black due to the burns. His forehead was torn, giving a view of the inner layers of forehead. He had hardly any clothes left on his limp body and was shaking constantly. I checked his pulse and dragged him into the OT, calling out for my assistant and intern Derek.
"He hasn't reported yet Dr. Styles." Stacy, the receptionist informed.
I cursed under my breath and proceeded to operate. After about an hour I had completed the initial treatment of the airway and resuscitation of the burn shock, the kid was needed to be placed into a special tub to clean the wounds with mild soap solutions.
