Taylor's enjoying herself. And quite a lot, actually.
Now, Cara can't say she's not surprised. Her sister usually tends to see the brighter side of everything and never wipes the smile off of her face. It's quite refreshing and annoying at the same time.
Right now, Taylor has a broom on her hand and she's cleaning around the new house. Her favorite song's blasting through the whole place on repeat. Cara's wanted to rip her hair off a few times now.
Yet, seeing her sister singing loudly, dorkily dancing with her pretty dress flowing around her, she has a hard time feeling annoyed.
It's a dilemma for her. She feels joy just by watching her sister in such a good mood, admiring her from the stairs while she sweeps the living room. Nonetheless, she can't help but feel a bit envious.
How can she feel like that? How can she be all giggles when all Cara wants to do is lock herself up in her room with the covers all around her and cry until she has no more tears left, and then cry some more.
How can she act like everything's okay when Cara's world seems to be falling apart?
The thought makes her look away and all trace of her potential good mood vanishes.
She guesses this is what Mom would have wanted. For them to not be discouraged by the loss, and for them to find a little light to keep them going.
Well, apparently, her father and her sister hadn't had so much trouble with doing just that.
But Cara couldn't bring herself to do so.
How could she?
Her eyes flick to the door when she sees it open and her dad comes in, with a big smile on his face.
"Hello, dolls!" He yells as soon as he steps in and Taylor enthusiastically returns the greeting. Cara says nothing. Her dad just looks a her.
"I got some fresh fish! The owner of the shop said it was the best fish on the island. I guess we'll have to see!" He rushes towards the kitchen to, most likely, put the fish away. Cara's eyes follow him until he disappears out of sight.
Their new house was nice enough, she thinks.
It was small, with only a small living room and kitchen on the first floor and three small bedrooms on the second floor. Everything looked made of wood and it had a nice feel to it. It was on a small hill, and not very far from the beach.
She would've liked it if not for the reason behind their moving.
The day went on and she didn't do much, but help her sister arrange some of the furniture, just because she asked very nicely.
She's not sure there is someone on this planet who can say no to Taylor.
At around six, her dad called them up to have dinner. He had somehow cooked the fish and it didn't look half bad. He had always been the chef around the house.
They're having dinner, and it's her dad and her sister who keep the conversation going. Taylor's babbling about how excited she is to go into town and get to know the island. She's even considering signing up for Hula classes.
The dinner is nice. Not very different from what it had been the past couple of days, Cara only focusing on eating and playing with her food the whole time, never looking up.
At some point, the chatter startsto die down, and Cara doesn't notice until his dad clears his throat, clearly to catch her attention.
Finally, she looks up and sees both members of her family looking right at her. The air's a bit more tense, she can feel it. The expression on the people in front of her completely different from what they were mere seconds ago.
Taylor lets out a heavy sigh, "Honey, we need to talk." She says in an uncharatesistic serious tone.
Cara frowns, not knowing what this is all about. She isn't sure she wants to find out.
He dad intervenes, "There is something we have to tell you. Propably should have told you sooner," there's guilt on his face, and now he's not even looking at her, just staring at the glass in his hands.
She's just clueless.
